Question about 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

I drive a 2001 model chevy malibu.. i was in a wreck yesterday, the airbags were deployed. at first, everything was fine other than the headlights being smashed and a bit of body damage; the car would start up just like it would normally, it would run just normally and i even took it for a test drive around the block when i got it back home. but later on in the day when i was going to head to the store, the car wouldn't start. turning the key over, there is no noise whatsoever, and none of the lights, radio, and other electric devices in the car work. it seems almost as if it has something to do with the battery or electrical system. i've heard people say things about "oh well when the airbag deploys it blows the positive terminal" and blah blah... but i don't know and i have no clue what could be wrong, any advice on getting this thing back on the road if it's simple enough for me to do? i'm just screwed cause neither of us (the person i got in a wreck with and i) has insurance. :( -michael ayres

so yeah i just removed the battery so that it wouldn't drain it any further, if that was even necessaryu. just went on instinct there.i looked on the inside where the impact had happened, nothing appeared to be affected at all but the headlight.(s) urgh.

ok now; so i removed the battery on instinct, in the case that it is continuing it's draining the battery. don't know how necessary that was, just instinct or whatsoever. i checked on the inside around where the impact was. nothing seems damaged, everything seems to be normal, i can't imagine how to recognize a short by looking for it though so *shrug*.

It's very possible that the crash damage has caused an electrical short that is draining the battery.

At this point if you are not familiar with car electrics, you need to have a technician check for any current drain from the battery, there will always be a small amount from things like the computer, radio and other electronic devices. The health of the battery should also be checked, maybe the impact caused internal damage to the battery.

You probably left something on to drain the battery. My advice is to always have insurance and then someone else would have to worry about what is wrong and will fix it for you. Since you did not have insurance now my advice is to look at e-bay to replace all the damaged parts. You can purchase airbags and module for $125, headlamp assembly for $30, windshield for $75. That way you can soon get it inspected and purchase the new tag and!! dont forget to obtain insurance!!!!! Steven Ayres

I don't kno the extent of damage but if a 2002 chevy malibu had the airbags deployed will it still start.. i had someone tell me once airbags are deployed the car won't start

There are computer and safety interlocks that generally prevent cars from starting after the airbags deploy. Some cars have explosive bolts that also fire to disconnect the battery and fuel pump after an airbag deployment. These are all meant to limit damage in an accident. I suggest you take the car on a flatbed truck to a dealer or mechanic.

Location airbag sensors on a 2001 Chevy Venture

Not being too familiar with the Chevy venture apart from being in the vacinity of the radiator somewhere the only other option I would of thought is on the front part of a chassis rail where the bumper bolts to my reason being is that you would not want the airbags to deploy from a slow impact but a more fierce impact when damage could start to crush the front part of the chassis then the airbags would be deployed

Have there been any unexplained air bag deployment in 2005 santa fe on the drivers side while in motion. my husband was driving and he said the air bag deployed and then he hit a car in front of him. do... is the website I checked for your car and found no reference to this issue. There are reports of airbag deployments with no collisions, although they are rare. The computer in your car is capable of displaying the deployment, and may show which sensor in the front if any caused it to deploy (collision first/deployment second) or if no sensor signal (deployment first / collision second) is logged. Whatever the outcome, you will need a specialist in data extraction to achieve this.

Where are the airbag sensors on a 2002 Malibu? Daughter ran off road, hit ditch & did damage to right front from headlight down....both airbags that normal?

Hi, the impact sensors for the air bags are usually located between the headlights more or less at the lowest point of the headlights. It is possible that the air bags will deploy as the impact sensors work with vibration. If the vibration is big enough to activate the sensor the air bags will deploy.

The airbag dash light comes on and off while driving down the road. Does this mean the airbag can deploy?

An airbag is not likely to falsely deploy. Whenever the light is on it means the airbag system is disabled. However it is never safe driving a vehicle with a malfunctioning airbag system.
