Question about 2000 Dodge Ram 3500

1 Answer

My '99 Dodge surges when I go out to start it. I usually have to cycle the key at least three times before I try to crank the motor before it will start at all. It does this every time, however, sometime it takes more attempts than others. It has taken me up to 5 minutes to get it started before. It always starts eventually, and when it does, it runs great. No problems with power at all. When it's surging, the pedal is completely dead. It will not move or do anything other than surge. After a few seconds of surging, it'll die on its own and the cycle starts all over. Any clue? All mechanics I've tried have no idea.

For Robert Mcmillan: OPs question is not really clear on what the symptoms are, but in 50 years of working on cars/trucks, I've never heard the term Fly Wheel Pitch. Can you explain?

Check for vacum leaks on hose going from the intake to the brake booster. Also check the website. Click on the for users button. Enter in last eight digits of vin and see if pcm (computer) needs a update, or if there is any other open recalls on the van.

SOURCE: Engine Surge at idle

I would recommend that you clean the intake throttle valve and idle speed control valve with carb cleaner, start the engine and hole a high idle while you spray (it will try to stall) the intake, use most of the can, then let the engine stall, disconnect the battery and wait one hour, reconnect battery and, start the engine and throttle it up good a couple of times to blow the carbon and sludge out, the idle should improve, if not you may have a hard part issue, but that is rare.

My Dodge Caravan SE does not start every time? if you turn the key off and on again three times it will start any idea's

Meaning when you try to start the engine doesn't crank over? If this is happening, then it is the ignition switch that is bad. But if it cranks over and doesn't start. When you cycle the key, you turn the fuel pump on every time and it pressures up the system. The check ball in the fuel sending unit or fuel pump is stuck open, letting the fuel drain back to the tank. I would live with it until the pump fails. Because to fix it you have to replace the sending unit and pump. Shop cost is around $600.

Replace the timing belt and the car will not crank

Always crank motor over by hand with a ratchet or breaker bar before attempting to start with key. You can very well ruin or lock up your motor if the timing is incorrect before you try to start with key. If its locked up, unhook battery. Place ratchet and socket on crank pully. rotate in reverse and then try to rotate forward. If there is anything holding the motor from turning by hand, pull timing belt and make sure everything is aligned correctly and try to crank by hand again 2 or 3 revolutions. If tight or locked, then motor needs inspected for bent, jammed valves, broken pistons.

The check engine light should be on and when it is the engine controls are in Limp mode. That means the computer is using a pre-set list of settings to try to keep the engine running long enough to get the car to a shop.
You need to get the problem with the MAP sensor fixed and get the light turned off.

My 99 corvette ran out of gas and I put gas in it and it turns over but doesn't seem to fire and won't start

Prime the pump. Put the key in, turn it to full electrical power (right before you'd start the motor) - you should hear the fuel pump kick on for several seconds. Once it stops, turn the key off for 20 seconds or so. Repeat this three to six times - that should be enough to build up fuel pressure. Then try cranking the engine over.
