There are usually marks on the timing gears that must be properly aligned toward each other in order to keep proper timing settings. Your local auto parts store should sell repair manuals for about $30 to provide step by step directions. Be aware, that it is common, when timing belts break, to bend a valve or two in the process. This is a difficult job even for experienced mechanics and requires specialty tools as well.

I need to replace my water pump.. I have a new timing belt and tensioner on it.. do i need to replace the belt again? and How do i get the water pump off and keep it in time?

The pump should have been replaced when the belt was. Most shops will not replace just the pump without changing the belt. If you are doing it yourself it's fine. To keep everything lined up use a grease pencil and draw lines on the belt aand pulleys in two places on each pulley. This should make it pretty much impossible to get it wrong.

How often do you replace a serpentine belt? I replaced it in 2007/ my last report from toyota says that it is cracking AND I assumed that it was the serpentine belt- but maybe there other belts in a car?...

There is only one serpentine belt in your car. The belt's usually last much longer then 2 years, best thing to do is go to a parts store like Auto Zone or Parts Source and they can inspect the belt for you and show you how to inspect the belt. It's not the out side that you inspect, but the inside where the ribs are. Inspect the ribs for cracks or missing ribs, you can also maintain the belt by purchasing belt re-conditioner. The re-conditioner will keep the belt from getting to hard and cracking and give you longer life, Auto Zone can also give you the step by step instructions for you to replace your own belt if you need to. Good luck and hope this helps.

How do i get the timing belt back on my chrysler lhs 1996

YOU NEED TO COMPRESS THE BELT TENSIONER IN A VISE STICK A PAPER CLIP IN IT TO HOLD IT IN UNTIL YOU GET TIMING BELT IN PLACE.THEN YOU PUT TENSIONER IN.DONT REMOVE PAPER CLIP OR UNLOAD IT UNTIL YOU GET TIMING MARKS ON CAMSPROCKETS AND CRANK SHAFT LINE UP RIGHT.IF YOUR BELT TENSIONER IS THE ORIGINAL I WOULD REPLACE IT.YOU ALSO NEED A MANUAL.MAKE SURE TIMING MARKS IS RIGHT.IF NOT YOU GOING TO HAVE VALVES AND PISTON DAMAGE.

03 kia rio-24000 km.will valves hit piston if belt breaks?

yep valves will hit piston if timing belt brake.timing belt keep your valves and piston timed.when intake valves and exhaust valve open.piston is on down stroke.the timing belt keep pistons and valves from colliding.your timing belt change is due at 60000 miles.but in some cases belt need to be inspect at 30000 miles.to be on the safe side.

I need instructions on replacing the timing belt

1. Remove the Alternator Belt.
2. Remove the Water Pump Pulley
3. Remove the Air Conditioner Belt and Power Steering Belt.
4. Remove the Crankshaft Pulley.
5. Remove the timing belt cover
6. Remove the timing belt tensioner pulley.
7. Remove the Timing Belt.
8. (If Replacing) Remove Idler Pulley.
Installation is reverse of removal. Keep a close eye on the timing marks on the cam sprockets to make sure you don't knock anything out of whack.

I would strongly recommend replacing the water pump while you are replacing the timing belt. (The water pump usually comes in the timing belt kit.) Otherwise you are going to have to do this all over again when your water pump goes out. Good Luck.
