Timing chains are very difficult, even for experienced mechanics. Your local auto parts store should sell repair manuals for about $30 that will guide you through the process if you insist on doing it yourself. There are specialty tools, that you will also need to do the job properly.

My timing chain sounds loose. can it be adjusted or should it be replaced? 2003 nissan altima 2.0

If it is running loose for a long time and is worn then should be replaced as soon as
But if the tensioner has come loose which it shouldn't have then an inspection of the links will further tell you if it should be replaced. There are ways to inspect the timing chain. This is a rough guide.

Timing Chain and Sprockets Cleaning and Inspection
  1. Clean the components with cleaning solvent.
Caution Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

  2. Dry the components with compressed air.

  3. Inspect the timing chain for binding or wear.

  4. Inspect the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets for:
    • Worn teeth (1)
    • Damaged teeth (2)
    • Chipped teeth (3)
    • Worn valleys between the sprocket teeth

  5. Inspect the crankshaft sprocket keyway for wear.
  6. Inspect the crankshaft sprocket oil pump drive splines for wear.

  7. Inspect the chain guide (232) for the following conditions:
    • Loose metal inserts (1)
    • Cracking (2) in the chain contact area
    • Excessive grooves (3) in the chain contact area Grooves 1 mm (0.040 in) or less in depth are to be considered normal wear.

Wait 5 seconds. 3 Return the key to off position. 4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 twice ( total of tree cycles). 5 Start the engine. Does engine start ?? Yes...System is OK. Engine diagram for 97 nissan altima

Go to the autozone.com website and register the vehicle information. It's free and will give you access to an online repair manual for the car. It's not a diagram, but it certainly is a handy resource for anyone planning to do maintenance on their vehicle. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Does a 1999 nissan altima gxe have a timing belt or a timing chain and if it does have a chain does it have to be replaced as often as a belt?

I think it has a chain. look where the timing chain/ belt should be. if there is a large plastic cover, it has a belt, it its a aluminum cover, it has a chain. there is no replacement interval on a chain.

When should i change trans oil

One sure way to tell, is if your transmission fluid is not cherry red. Its supposed to be a bright red color. If its not, then you should have it flushed out and replaced. Good luck.

You have a timing chain no belt. Changing is not necessary unless there is a failure. Water pump will need changing when it leaks.
