Question about 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab
Rams come with 3.9 V6 5.2 V8, and the 5.9 V8 The 5.2 and 5.9 have an intake gasket problem that the bottom of the upper phelm has a plate that blows the gasket. The gaskets cheap but the repair job takes all day but let's check to see if this is what happened to yours. Theirs a PCV valve connected to the valve cover and theirs a breather hose going from the other valve cover to the air claener hosing or hose. Remove both of these from the valve covers and temporany block the hole in the valve cover ( both) a peice of rag and jam the hose back on and fire the truck back up. if it runs alot better or even perfect you know the manifold bottom plate gasket blew. If your not handy trearing motors down for repair work it's best you hire the job done, I'm a pro and the fastest I've done it is 4 hours, and that's with all the right power tools and the parts store bringing me the parts and the front counter keeping peaple out of my way, and the experience of having done the work before. Lets say it's no help to block off the vacume leak into the crankcase. The check engine light is on and it's staying on. The Map senser measures manifold vacume and reports it to the computer, if it's got a broken vacume hose, a broken wire, or a bad senser ( in that order) the computer will have a MAP code in it and it'll run like you say. New map sensers cost a bit so don't just run out and get one, The coolant temperture senser can be bad and if it were to say to the computer that the engine is coldeder than it really is then it'll do what you say but again the check engine light will be on. A fuel injector can leak (most of the time if one injector leaks it's just a one cyclinder miss) the fuel pressure regulator can leak fuel into the intake and this leak will make it run good full throttle and load up and blck smoke only at idle. The gasket is the most likly cause and theirs service bulltins and most Dodge mechanics know about it.
