Question about 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

Won't start Have had no problems until 3 days ago. Shut car off and it would not start 2 hrs later. Next day started and ran fine but would not start again the next morning and still not starting. Thought it was the fuel pump but found out it is fine. Next we thought it may be the altenator but won't start even with a jump. Drains battery when you try to start it.

I was in a accident over two years ago, T-boned on the passenger side. Since I didn't have the money I just left it be, foamed the doors shut to stop leaks and kept driving it. I know that's a horrible idea but hey, i'm broke commuting to school every day. I noticed the battery kept draining so i assumed that the door sensors were left open so I took out the overhead bulb. That worked until about a month ago when the battery would drain if you didn't start it for a few days. Even that wasn't certain because I started it fine after it had sat for a week. Conversely, sometimes it drains the battery after just a night. I checked all the lights to see if they were on, and nothing was. I thought the alternator was bad but it's just fine... I dont know what's going on here.

First place I would check are the battery terminals. Remove them and clean the posts, re-attach and tighten them. You can buy a tool for cleaning the posts at your local auto store.

This is a good indication of a bad ignition control module. The module is located under the coil pack (where all of your spark plug wires come from) and may be testable. Auto Zone says they can't accurately test this part but it is $100 to replace it.
