For optimum performance, the converter must be installed so exhaust flows through it in the proper direction. When laying beneath the vehicle with your feet towards the rear, the converter should be installed so the numbers stamped into it are readable.
s Random Technology Super Flow catalytic converters are designed to fit a variety of vehicles. Special adapters may be required or special air tube adapters may be required.
s If a converter with air tubes is installed on a vehicle not equipped with an air management system, both air tube fittings must be plugged.
s If a converter is installed on a vehicle with an air management system, one air tube elbow & one plug must be used.

Plug Installation
Determine which air tube fittings (if either) are to be used to make air connection in your application. (Plug the side away from the vehicle's air supply management system.) Plug the fitting(s) not used before installing converter.

2. Place plug(s) into airtube fitting(s). See Figure 2 for direction of plug.
3. With a hammer tap plug(s) into airtube fitting (s) until seated. The top of the plug(s) will be flush with the end(s) of the tube. See
Figure 3.
4. Crimp the end of the tube over the plug with pliers. Crimp in at least 4 places. See Figure 4.


Airtube Elbow Installation
The airtube elbow is installed on the same side of the converter as the
vehicle's air supply management system. The remaining tube should be plugged (See above). If your vehicle is not equipped with an air management system, both tubes should have been plugged.

After installing catalytic converter on the vehicle:

1. As shown in Figure 1, insert the airtube elbow into the converter's airtube fitting.
2. Position elbow in correct direction to connect air management system and secure either by welding or by using a small clamp.
3. Complete connection to the vehicle's air management system. (An airtube attachment kit may be required.)

A muffler shop can install this, it needs to be welded on. Unless you have the equipment. The old has to be cut off and new installed.

Bad Oxygen sensor. Possibly _also_ bad catalytic converter. If less than (roughly) 70,000 miles, the converter is likely good. But your symptoms are 100% consistent with a bad oxygen sensor (which are sometimes attached directly to the catalytic converter). // Note: If you do need a catalytic converter, have it done at the Dealership. The ''muffler shops'' will install a generic (probably ''ceramic'') replacement, which could adversely affect performance, gas mileage, and _definitely_ not last more than a few years.

Where are the catalytic converters located


There are only two catalytic converters. They are of a high efficiency type and as such, they are tucked on each side of the engine directly bolted to the exhaust manifolds. You won't see them easily from underneath the car as you would on most vehicles. Item #1 and #11 in the diagram below are the catalytic converters.

Why is the area by the pedal so hot?


The most likely reason is when the new cat was installed, the mechanic did not reinstall the stock heat shield that protects the floor from the excessive heat of the catalytic converter. the heat shield either mounts to the floor underneath the car, about the converter, or mounts directly to the converter. Another possibility is that the heat shield was integral to the converter, and the converter that your mechanic installed was a cheap version that did not come with the required heat shield. Either way, I would suggest you try to get the problem resolved, as excessive heat from the converter could cause a whole host of issues.

Can a universal catalyic converter work in my car?


Yes a universal catalytic converter can work in your 1996 dodge caravan, however it entails fitting and welding which requires a fair amount of skill and labor, the direct fit catalytic converter is generally recommended ,this type of converter is directly bolted on to the exhaust manifold with a gasket in between. .

its your catalytic converter (colloquially, "cat" or "catcon") is a vehicle emissions control device which converts toxic byproducts of combustion in the exhaust of an internal combustion engine to less toxic substances by way of catalysed chemical reactions. The specific reactions vary with the type of catalyst installed. Most present-day vehicles that run on gasoline are fitted with a "three way" converter, so named because it converts the three main pollutants in automobile exhaust: an oxidizing reaction converts carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) to CO2 and water vapour, and a reduction reaction converts oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to produce CO2, nitrogen (N2), and water (H2O).[1] The first widespread introduction of catalytic converters was in the United States market, where 1975 model year gasoline-powered automobiles were so equipped to comply with tightening U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations on automobile exhaust emissions.[2][3][4][5] These were "two-way" converters which combined carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). p0420 is a catalytic converter efficiency code. It sets when thecm determines that the catalytic converter is no longer doing its job. The usual fix is to replace the catalytic converter. An O.E. or an aftermarket direct fit converter from a reputable manufacturer is your best bet. Lesser quality brands will leave your pocket book lighter to start but will cause more problems than they solve.

There is a problem with the catalytic converter. P0420 sets when the downstream o2 sensor is either reading higher than expected or reading simular to the upstream O2 sensor. Either way it is usually the catalytic converter that is the source of the problem and rarely the downstream O2 sensor.

The Catalytic converter is located in the exhaust system under the car. Catalytic converters from either the dealer or a quality direct fit part from a reputable manufacturer are recommended. Cheap cats lead to lots of problems!

I have an 1998 Chevy Blazer and need to change the catalytic converter, are the flange bolts welded and can i cut them


Catalytic Converter Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine To Remove:

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe flange mounting nuts from the catalytic converter.
  4. Remove the catalytic converter flange mounting nuts from the muffler.
  5. Remove the catalytic converter from the muffler.
  6. Remove the catalytic converter from the rear hanger bracket insulator.
  7. Remove the catalytic converter.
  8. Remove the (HO2S) from the catalytic converter.
To Install:
  1. Install the (HO2S) to the catalytic converter.
  2. Install a new gasket and the catalytic converter to the muffler.
  3. Install catalytic converter to the catalytic converter hanger.
  4. Install the catalytic converter flange mounting nuts to the muffler flange.
    • Tighten to 26 ft lbs (35 Nm).
  5. Install the catalytic converter flange mounting nuts to the exhaust manifold pipe flange.
    • Tighten to 26 ft lbs (35 Nm).
  6. Connect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
------ Catalytic Converter Removal & Installation 4.3L Engine To Remove:
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Raise and support the transmission.
  3. Remove the transmission support
  4. Disconnect the left and right pre-converter heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the post-converter (HO2S) connector. Muffler flange and gasket gm-03-43-731.gif

  6. Remove the catalytic converter flange mounting nuts from the muffler.
  7. Remove the catalytic converter from the muffler.
  8. Remove the exhaust manifold flange mounting nuts from the catalytic converter. Catalytic converter 4.3L engine gm-03-43-735.gif

  9. Remove the catalytic converter from the support bracket insulator.
  10. Remove the catalytic converter and gaskets.
  11. Remove the heated oxygen sensor.
To Install:
  1. Install the heated oxygen sensors as needed.
  2. Install a new gasket and the Install the catalytic converter to the support bracket insulator.
  3. Install the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold flange. Install the mounting nuts.
    • Tighten to 39 ft lbs (53 Nm).
  4. Using a new flange gasket, install the catalytic converter to the muffler. Install the mounting nuts.
    • Tighten to 30 ft lbs (40 Nm).
  5. Connect the left and right pre-converter heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.
  6. Connect the post-converter (HO2S) electrical connector.
  7. Install the transmission support.
  8. Lower the transmission.
  9. Lower the vehicle.

clogged , check the rest of your exhaust after cat to see if it gets hot

you can buy a no contact thermometer for less than $55.00

but the shop that installed the cat should have that

TRYING TO LOCATE THE O2 SENSORS


02 sensors are generally located in a few places, one will be directly in the exhuast manifold itself, one will be before the catalytic converter, and one after the catalytic converter. All are directly bolted into the exhaust.
