Question about 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD
I have a 1999 dodge ram 1500 3.9 liter engine. I am replacing the harmonic balancer. I am trying to get the fan clutch off and soo forth how do i get the fan clutch apart? I rented the special tools they said i needed. Could you brief me on this please id really appreciate it. Thanks
Well if i remember correctly that fan clutch is reverse threads so in other words to loosen it you'll have to turn your wrench clockwise. they do this cuz the rotation of the fan will tighten itself onto the water pump. anyway what i do is leave the serpentine belt on the the pulleys and that will kinda hold them steady whilst you put the "special" wrench on the clutch and pop it loose you'll prolly need a cheater bar to make things easier but not too much or you'll overcome the traction of the belt and it will just slip.

Rotation is left hand thread nut is too small to fit a wrench on with fan clutch on so leave belt hooked up on all pulleys .i use a air hammer! no air?use a big screw driver flathead and a hammer ketch the corner of nut going to the right hit screw driver about two or three times till fan clutch nut moves a litt no special tools needed!
