Question about 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT

1 Answer

I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT with a 3.4 liter V6. We just had the head gaskets replaced and we put all the internals back on correctly down to the last bolt. When we started it up it was misfiring like crazy. We changed the plugs, idle air control valve, camshaft sensor, checked the firing order and the fuel injectors. The wires are freshly changed as well. Everything seems to be working fine. I'm at a loss. Could it be the fuel filter? Or something else entirely? We haven't checked the coil packs or the ignition control module yet but I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. And btw when we changed the plugs and the idle air valve it seemed to do a little better but there's still a problem. Please let me know soon!!!

I would check the spark and fuel.

Check spark quality with a spark tester on each plug wire.

Check fuel delivery by checking pressure with a pressure gauge, then checking if each fuel injector is firing by listening with a stethoscope placed on each fuel injector for a telltale 'clicking' sound.

If there is a miss, you'll find the cause by the above procedure.

4.3 v6 head gasket torque schematic

first round is at 22lbs, second 44lbs, third 66lbs. make sure you get the order in which the bolts need to be tightened as not to warp the cylinder head, and that sequence is in the package your new head gasket (s) came in. If you cant find it, your local garage will photocopy it for you.

I need to change the oil pressure sensor, where is it found

The oil pressure sending unit is located to the right of the oil filter and just above the starter motor. This is on the 3.4 liter V6.
On the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder the switch is on the left (drivers) side of the cylinder head.

That is an intake backfire, meaning you have the valve timing wrong. Not quite sure right now on what it should be but check timing belt position and valve timing gear positions.
