Question about 1991 Subaru Justy

1 Answer

Justy 1991 ECVT

I have a problem with the ECVT transmission. It feels like the transmission is slipping in and out of gear, and the car bunnyhops along the road. The engine itself seems to be fine. Any ideas?

Sadly my situation is even more dramatic. It was riding normally
*although I was hearing a sort of hissing noise like a disk brake
rubbing for a while before that( and then suddenly it sort of slipped
out of gear. Like a burned out cluthch. But really bad. I barely made
it to a parking lot. It's still there.

Sorry jhughes71, but your comment is no help at all.

However, I can advise that my Justy is running again and going very well with the ECVT still in place. The problem was an engine oil leak (which I believe is common in these engines) causing oil to leak onto the brushes in the automatic clutch. I got the engine taken out, split, reassembled with new gaskets and seals, and now it goes well. The bill was slightly more than the car is worth.

Transmission a common problem in these cars .i had 2 do me the same way.the ecvt tranny will be very hard to find and expensive probably more than what the car is worth .honestly not down-gradeing your justy because i have 3 right now and love them (all 5 speeds) .its just these trannys are so expensive and cheap built .if you could find one it probably wont last as long as the one you had its just a major problem in these cars.if it was my car i would sell it or change it over to a straight drive .the straight drives had good trannys in them.if you decide to sell it i would love to take it off your hands thanks jeff

stevehender - why in the world would you rate this as inappropriate when all i was doing was trying to help you. your the one posted the above thread quote:(i have a problem with the ecvt transmission)not me. i didnt post it nor anyone else did.you did .i never gave you some off the wall advise such as mabe your running out of gas .or mabe something is wrong with your leg causeing your foot to go up and down causeing the car to bunnyhop.or mabe you have passengers in the back jumping up and down causeing the bunny hop.no i gave you a possible solution trying to help you with your transmission problem.ask anyone thats had transmission problems with these justys and they will tell you the same thing.also your above post said the engine itself seems fine .you never said its pooring oil e.t.c you ask for help about the ecvt transmission.not a engine leak.as to why you would rate this as inappropriate i have no clue.unless your one of these type of people that expects someone to come over and fix it for free.

I own a 1991 Subaru justy gl , when driving in any gear , the rear transaxle/wheels will start making a thudding and squeaking sound. Any ideas at what a troubleshoot would be ?

Could be any number of things. Usually, dealers will diagnose for $100. It may be a serious problem that may contribute to a situation you or your insurance company would not want you to be in.

1991 chevy lumina automatic transmission, slips in 4th and overdrive, and you can push the car in all gears except park

Well, you can push any automatic trans car in any gear except park.
As for slipping in overdrive which is 4th gear, if the trans is full of fluid, you're probably looking at replacing it to fix it.
Could be a list of things such as clutches or dirt in the valve body.

Whats the sensor that is under the distributor on a 1991 honda civic ex?.my car doesnt start without that. also from 1st to 2nd gear my car feels like it slips out of gear and shakes or something..does...

I think you mean the distributor ignition module
If you have an automatic transmission it probably
a vacuum advance valve/Sensor hose may be missing or
defective. You can probably find the manual at your local
library

Transmission slipping

the transmission doesn't have a dipstick, on the rh side(transmission side) the fill and drain plugs are located where the axle is inserted into the transmission usually the fill plug is opened with a 17mm wrench and the drain plug is opened with a 3/8 ratchet(fits perfectly into the square hole. and you fill it up until it runs out of the fill hole. you could consult your manual for the proper type. honda used to use motor oil 5w30, 10w30, but they have since replaced the use of those fluids with ther own manual trans fluid which is somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 us a quart(at least in my neighborhood) it holds like 2+1/2 qts us. the problem that you have sounds like a worn out clutch, which typically slips in the higher gears, also if your model has an egr valve that could cause the car to surge between 1400-2500 rpm which could feel like "slippage" usually the egr valves don't go bad but the control solonoids do.
i hope that this helps
