I suggest scanned the PCM in order to know what fault code is stored there; additionally check brake pedal switch, this is located on back side (top) brake pedal.
Hope helps.

brake light switch under dash touches brake pedal arm when you step on brake it lets the switch go and turns on the lights they brake internally of just wear out kinda hard to get to also so you might want to have a mechanic change it hope this helps

Brake lights stay on

I believe this is most likely a faulty or stuck brake light switch. The lights are actuated when depressing the brake pedal thus closing the circuit in the switch usually attached to the upper end of the pedal near the hinge.

Jaguar x type brake lights stay on

the brake light switch has either moved out of the bracket just above the brake light pedal or the brake light switch itself is faulty.
look just above the brake pedal, there should be a switch on a bracket so that when you press the brake pedal the spring plunger piece of the switch moves out and the lights come on. make sure the plunger goes in when the brake pedal goes back to normal position.if the lights stay on when the plunger is pushed in the switch is faulty and needs changing, quite common. hope this helps
