You have a park brake release solenoid not working, there are several ways different car manufacturers have for manually releasing. But I would first locate the fuse panel usually on a newer Ford it's on the side of the dash with a popout cover that says pull, check your fuses if the fuse is blown replace it once if it works from then on ok, but if it blows out again right away you will need to locate the short to ground keeping in mind that it could be the solenoid drawing too much current.

Put your foot on the brakes and have someone see if you have brake lights. This has a shift interlock that uses the brake lights to complete the circuit that unlocks the shifter from park. You can bypass this saftey feature by applying brake, engine off key off and moving shifter to neutral then starting the engine Dont forget to fix your brake lights !!

Shifting Out of Park Position

hi..

spaclear.gif A simple procedure to prevent being jammed in PARK on a grade:
  1. Do not put it in PARK until, with foot brake applied, you've secured the parking (emergency) brake.

  2. Before releasing the parking brake, apply the foot brake and move the shift lever to NEUTRAL or DRIVE.

Hyundai accent won't shift out of park

You do have your foot on the brake when trying to shift ehh. If so could be a faulty brake to shifter cable.
Remove the center console and check that applying the brake de-activates the lock on the shifter

My suzuki verona 04, gear shifter is stuck on park, i have to hit the brakes severally for it to move to drive.

There is a lock mechanism that prevents moving shifter out of PARK unless your foot is on the brake. You can bypass this by sticking a small flat blade screwdriver or a key into the little slot on the console by the shift lever.

Are your brake lights coming on when you press the brake pedal? The shift lock is released electrically when your foot is on the brake, and the sensor is tied to the brake light switch circuit. The brake light switch can be seen if you look under the dash at the brake arm. First, check the connector. If the switch is out of adjustment, you can screw it in or out to adjust. Or just buy a new one.

My 1997 ford taurus wont shift out of park. The shifter seams to be stuck, it wont move. The shifter is on the steering wheel not the floor.

This is often a switch located on the brake pedal lever. The car requires you to press the Brake pedal before shiftting out of Park. You lose the signal when a foot hits or breaks this part. Look under the dash for the part and fix it.

Gear shift stuck in park

there is a u shaped clip that holds handle on stem, pull that and then pull handle off and then push down on the white stick that is in center of shifter and see if it can move out of park then, also make sure your foot is on brake ! if that that does'nt work then there is a little solenoid down by shifter that has to move when you put foot on brake so's that it will let you shift it (safety device) it may be bad or bad connection.

Shift geers stuck in park on 2004 aztek how do i unlock them truck will start up but stuck in park

There is a little gizmo called the BTSI (brake trans-axle shift interlock) that is usually the culprit for this problem. It is located sorta under and towards front of shifter.

t sounds like it could be two or three things:

1) Your park shift interlock isn't working. I think you are on the right track mentioning you had your foot on the brake. Usually, when one steps on the brake with the car in park, the interlock solenoid (BTSI) will "click" as it releases. Do you hear the solenoid? Perhaps the brake switch isn't working or is mis-aligned. It is up under the dash near the pedal hinge point. Do your brake lights come on? If so, the solenoid should be getting the signal it needs.

2) Another way the problem can occur is if you park on an incline and do not set your parking brake before you shift the transmission into park. Failure to set the parking brake first allows the weight of the car to roll against the "parking pawl" in the transmission. The weight of the car would bind things up. Going to have to rock the car up the hill to relieve the strain, something that would take another person if the incline was steep. In your case, you'd have to leave your foot off the brake to move the car to relieve the strain, then put your foot on the brake to engage the interlock.

Good luck, keep me posted

There is a bypass for the safety switch, unfortunately you have to remove the shift cover, the whole plastic piece. there is a white "lever" that you can push that will move the pin out of the way so you can shift it, you have to hold the piece and move the shifter at the same time. it is on the right side of the shifter base (under the plastic piece) you will see what I mean when you remove the center piece.

Will not shift out of park

can you move the shifter and it wont go into gear or will the shifter not move at all?? if shifter wont move, there is an electrical solinoid that will not allow the shifter to release when the car is off, that could be faulty, i think it also has a safety mechanism that wont allow it to shift if your foot is not on the brake? if the shifter moves through prn321 but the trans wont come out of park, you have broken the shifter cableand or damaged the shifter mechanism in the trans. hope i have been of some assistance

Put your parking brake on. Remove console panel. Put foot on brake. Turn ignition key to on position (Do NOT start vehicle!). Locate park lock cable (Parallel to drivers right knee). Press down on that cable with left hand while attempting to move shifter with right hand. Replace that cable if shifter moves out of park.
