Question about 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

2 Answers

Im currently deployed so and a friend was barrowing my truck so i dont have the best description of what is going on. But he told me he got a indication of the battery not charging then low battery and then started losing electrical power. He tried to limp it home when he lost all electrical power, the truck apprently automatically went into neutral and he said he heard "funny mechanical noises coming from the rear end". My initial thought would be the alternator or bad battery (fan belts are good), but is the shifting into neutral normal if electrical power is lost?

Yes, the transmission and engine will malfunction on low voltage. The alternator is the likely problem. Remove and replace with a lifetime warranteed alternator for trouble free charging. Hopefully, the battery was not damaged by the low voltage state for any length of time.

Good luck on this repair.

Likely the alternator failed. With the vast amount of electronics used in these vehicles, low power can cause just about any strange symptom you can think of. Replace the alternator (test first) Re-charge the battery before testing alternator. and then pay attention to any odd problems that remain, if any.

If it's not on the steering cloumn it's behind the airbag itself on the steering wheel.

WARNING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REMOVE THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE FOR AT LEAST 15 MINS TO DISCHARGE THE AIRBAG CAPACITOR OR IT WILL DEPLOY BEFORE WORKING ON IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
