Yes, the transmission and engine will malfunction on low voltage. The alternator is the likely problem. Remove and replace with a lifetime warranteed alternator for trouble free charging. Hopefully, the battery was not damaged by the low voltage state for any length of time.

Likely the alternator failed. With the vast amount of electronics used in these vehicles, low power can cause just about any strange symptom you can think of. Replace the alternator (test first) Re-charge the battery before testing alternator. and then pay attention to any odd problems that remain, if any.
