Hi,

It could be electrical, or mechanical.

The best a easiest way to find out what the problem is will be to connect an OBD II scanner to check for any faults in the electrical system.

For now though check that the fliud level in the transmission is ok and that the fliud is still a nice red color and not a dark brown/red color.
If it is get the transmission serviced this may also be the problem.

Hope this helped, let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason

You have a low fluid situation, check your fluid level, a bad solenoid, requires a transmission tech to isolate or repair. On rare occasions it could be a bad PCV valve on the transmission or a need for a fluid and filter change. You will notice I said CHANGE. Do not let the shop utilize a back flush type machine to recycle the Transmission fluid. Once you start seeing conditions like this it is a bad idea to use this device plus your vehicle is equipped with a carbon fiber filter and using the back flush system will destroy that filter and your transmission. If the fluid level is good, you will need to take the vehicle to a shop and have the Transmission checked. There is a slim possibility that the Torque converter needs repair but I would bet on a bad Solenoid or Belts needing adjustment.

The solenoids in the Transmission are electrical but only a Tech with a transmission computer will be able to isolate these. It is possible it is a TCM issue but again, with out that testing computer you won't be able to isolate it. I realize this isn't the solution you were hoping for as you are most likely looking at a $1500 rebuild cost but I would rather be truthful with you up front.

Possibly but you need a special computer to test for that. Possible TCM, Possible Electrical Solenoid inside the transmission.

If you drive it a few days like that ,you will have a $3000 repair bill

instead of a $332.20 Solenoid Trans Pack, I put in my 2004

Any time you have, any trans issues, you stop driving it immediately
You never drive again, until diagnosed and repaired

I used to own a trans repair shop.

You will have to add labor to yours.

1990 Nissan 300zx w/ shifting issue

well Im sure theres a ton of miles on it-do u perform reg maint like checkin fluid level-u may need the throttle cable ajusted that hooks to trans-band n clutch could be out of measure too--trans hydra-valve system could be worn--see all these things effect the way the fluid makes the gears move--a pressure test can confirm an aging trans

300Zx will not shift out of 5th gear

is there any pedal pressure when you step on the clutch? I had a similiar problem with my 91 300zx tt....it was stuck in third gear, no pedal pressure on the clutch whatsoever....i had cracked the pivot ball and the clutch slave 'popped out'. i had to pull the trans to fx the problem because i could not reattach the clutch fork onto the release bearing with the trans in the vehicle....you need to bleed the system...gravity bleed the slave until there are no air bubbles. make sure you top off the clutch master cylinder in the process.....then bleed the clutch operating cylinder.....it is in the passenger front hood near the power steering resivoir....top off the clutch master cylinder again. i hope this helps.

Reverse acts as neutral. (auto tranny)

It is hard to say, but as long as all of the forward gears work fine, then it might work for a long time. But without knowing what is wrong, I would at least change the fluid to remove as much metal or clutch material as you can. Don't worry about the filter, you can't change it without disassembling the trans. Just drain the fluid and refill it. This won't fix reverse, but it might prolong further problems. And don't park where you can't pull straight out.
