Check for spark and gas.

Add a little gas to the throttle body or carb. inlet and see if it fires up. If it does, then the ignition is ok and the fuel pump circuit may be bad.

If it doesn't the ignition system may be the problem.

The following may aid in understanding the ignition side of things:

ELECTRONIC IGNITION Description and Operation NOTE: All models utilize a crank angle sensor in the distributor. This sensor is used to provide engine position information to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU regulates ignition timing electronically, therefore no vacuum or centrifugal advance is used. Also, because of the ECU control, no periodic service adjustments are necessary. However, if timing or idle speed problems are suspected a combined ignition timing and idle speed inspection procedure is provided. Fig. 1: Distributor assembly with crank angle sensor - note the retaining screws Truck was idlilg and then - 86712013.gif
The only major component in the electronic ignition distributor assembly is the crank angle sensor. It is basically a rotor plate wheel with 360 slits, one per degree of crankshaft rotation. A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is mounted above the slits and a photo diode is below. As each **** uncovers the LED, the photo diode detects the signal and reports to the ECU. A second LED/photo diode pair is mounted inboard of the 1 degree set to read slits indicating Top Dead Center (TDC) of each cylinder, with a special signal for the No. 1 cylinder. On all engines, the assembly is in the distributor (retained by 2 screws), just below the rotor. Fig. 2: Power transistor and ignition coil 86712014.gif
Fig. 3: Crank angle sensor components 86712015.gif
The ECU sends an ignition signal to a power transistor, which turns the coil primary circuit on and off. The primary circuit current is amplified by a resistor. The ignition system is a standard configuration: one power transistor firing one ignition coil, which sends the high voltage to the distributor cap. prev.gif next.gif

Check fuses for ignition system and the fuel pump while you're at it.

The solenoid click sounds very strong, implying that you have a charged battery and the ignition circuit is functioning out to the solenoid. Suspect an issue with the starter motor. Is the starter motor installed and connected properly?

97 marquis fires up but dies

Do you have power to the fuel pump once the key ios released? Try this, start the engine and carefully let the ignition switch back off until the starter is not engaged, does it stay running? If so you need a new ignition starter switch, the switch is located on the top bottom of the steering column under the dash.

Van will not start. Battery is strong. Starter is turning over, but suddenly - and without warning - the van will not start.

  • check fuel supply(pump)..if no fuel....
check fuel pump relays and fuel pump
  • check ignition (or spark)at the plugs..no spark check plugs/damaged plug leads/faulty coil pack

1999 dodge ram 1500 won't start

Since you know the starter is good, now have the alternator and battery tested. If these are both good (if either or both are bad, obviously replace) then try replacing the starter relay; this will prevent a car from even turning over.

Also, check all starter fuses, iginition fuses and relays.

Q: Does the engine turn over?

Q: Does the engine start, then die, or just turn over?

Q: If it turns over, does it sound weak, or does it sound strong, like it's trying to start?

Q: Have you tired jump starting the truck? If not try this: if it starts and stays running, pull both battery terminals off. If the truck dies, replace the alternator. If it stays running, you may need to replace the battery. Look at the battery and see if there is a date sticker on it to indicate when the battery was purchased (or manufactured). (If diesel, have both batteries tested). If diesel, if jumpstarting from one battery doesn't work try the other one. Also, if diesel, make sure there is at least 1/4 tank of fuel as some diesels won't start if very low on fuel (pump does not reach very bottom of tank and will not syphin fuel in).

If gas/diesel, and it turns over, turn the key to the on position and have someone lean down at the back side of the truck (driverside) and listen for the fuel pump to engage. If no noise is heard, consider replacing the fuel pump. Inquire with an auto parts dealers as to whether or not this truck is equipped with a secondary fuel pump (usually located mid-way on the chassi).

Car was parked and running and just killed on its own and will not start. does this sound like the fuel pump or maybe fuel filter?

If the battery is strong and charged, starter is fine, car ran okay while getting progressively worse until it died and won't restart now, might be fuel filter or pump. I've dealt with two cars with fuel filter issues. Both would idle fine, but run progessively worse under load and eventually die and not start although everything else checked out. Engine turned fast enought to start, battery strong, alternator fine, air cleaner clean, all that. No start. Changed fuel filters and done. Everything back to normal. Both cars were about model year 1990 (1989 and 1991). Replaced one in a parking lot and car fired right back up and powered on home just fine, whereas the week leading up to it it ran worse and worse, hesitated on acceleration and finally would die if you hit the gas. Fuel filter may be in engine compartment. Looks like a canister with an in and an out for fuel. Pump is in gas tank and is way more work and money. Good luck, hope this helps.

Takes a jump to start but dies

More infomation neededas if the battery is new and the truck still needs a jump start then the battery /or wiring/Starter motor etc are no good as the battery is good for 12.5 volts and when running 13.5 max gharge so the engine should start and run 100% Unless you have a bad short somewere..
Also check fuel pump feed .
But check Starter motor first

02 yukon denali xl wont start, i replaced battery, alternaor and starter are both good truck still wont start

Did you try to replace the starter cable? is the Truck turning over or just clicking.? If it's turning over and not starting. Best guess would be one of two things. Knock sensors Located under intake manifold. they get wet and deteriorate or the fuel pump. I've replaced all three on mine. 233k still running strong...
