If you read the specifications on the chip, you will find that most of the advertised performance gain is way over 3500 rpm (out of the usable torque curve of the engine). Doubtful that it will give you the "boost" you think you will obtain but on the other hand, likely it won't do any damage. As far as any fuel savings, likely you'd need to drive the vehicle for ten years before any savings would balance with the cost of the chip.

Are there any REAL benefits from a performance chip for a 1998 cadillac sts? What's your problem? If so, whick make or model?

Yes there can be, depending on which chip you get. Most chips do the same things which is advance the timing and add additional fuel to richen the mixture and adjust the injector pulse width for more output. In most vehicles the manufacture reduces the HP to meet emissions standards and increase efficiency of the car. Example a motor that makes 400 hp may be reduced to 300 for efficiency and fuel economy also for reliability and longevity. I wouldn't go with a no name chip for something as they usually don't do the research a larger company does and most name brand companies will give you the HP and still keep your motor running within normal tolerance without maxing out the vehicle and making it unsafe. Do your research and google the chips and see if any real people are using it and what they have to say. Ebay is a good company to get a deal and variety on the chip. Good luck.

How much damage can a performance chip do

Performance chips likely don't harm anything... basically they alter the fuel and advance curve of the engine. Depending upon how the vehicle is used, sometimes they can give slight performance enhancement and even better fuel mileage.
If you do some research on them though, most of the advertised gains are so far out of the usable rpm range that the cost/benefit of a chip is downright foolish. (will a hp and torque increase at 4,000-5,000rpm help when the engine rarely sees that?)
On older GM vehicles a cheap performance gain could be had by swapping a chip from a heavier vehicle (like a Cadillac chip in a nova) That makes the computer think its moving a heavy vehicle and adds lots of power on the bottom end. (don't know if you can do that anymore though)
Bottom line is that they wont hurt anything but often won't give the advertised miracles they claim.

How do I install a performance chip for the IAT. Instructions say there are 2 wires to jumper but the IAT has 4 wires. The resistor has to go across the IAT wires.

that "performance chip" is not good for you car. that resistor is trying to make your car think the air coming into the intake is colder than it is, thus making your car use more fuel to perform better. slightly feel like more horsepower, use more gas.

I have heard of many "chips" and "superchips" that are suppose to boost a cars performance - they range from £10 to £500 - Does anyone know if these actually do anything or whether they are just...

They aren't just gimmicks. Some do work. All they do is change certain key parameters of the engune. Remember the manufacturer of th car has to share some of the performance for better fuel mileage. Aftermarket performans chip makers don't care how log your tires last or the engine or trans longivity. If you get one get one from a performance supplier with a good name. Nody I know of will stand behind any damages that may result. Good luck

Auto Performance moduals (or Chips)

If you want to get a chip. you are best to deal with a reputable parts supply company and get a chip which is going to do what you want. There are guys that will burn you a chip, ask around some of the different local car and tuner clubs they can put you on to the local guys that burn chips. Just don't get too crazy as performance chips for a lot of hp, can put a lot of strain on a stock engine. Keep in mind that hp cost's money. Trying to cheat to get large hp can cost you a lot more than doing it right the first time, blocks are not cheap.

Hope this helps.

Do after market performance chips work ?

A legitimate replacement chip can maybe void the warranty, but also be made to change engine characteristics to supply more power or better economy but will not likely do both.  Otherwise, why wouldn't the manufacturer use different performance curve?
Beware of something offered by hundreds of 'affiliates' that does nothing but tamper with the air-fuel ratio and sells for $20-$80 US and 'installs in minutes.' The vast majority of the 16,000+ offers on eBay are total frauds and many of the rest may alter the pollution output of the engine to the point that in some states could cost you even more than the chip.
Continue doing research before you spend even 'only a few bucks' on any of them.   I totally understand the urge, I still get it too, but lose it again after doing due diligence before ordering.

Start with a higher flowing airfilter, just a panel replacement as a pod filter have to be blocked off from the rest off the engine bay to get good gains as you need cold air to make power(more oxygen in cold air) and a larger diameter exhaust system(mandrel bent), this will free up the flow on both ends in and out. This is aways the first performance modifications to do for any standard car and the best bang for buck. Remember maintainance is the best foundation for performance, remember maintain before modify ie good plugs, fuel filter, clean airflow meter, leads, timing, oil etc... and will also be more economical on gas and make it last longer.I hope this helps. If you want anymore info on peformance just ask.
