1989 acura legend

I was driving my car when it just died. I couldn't get it started again. It was like it was out of gas. I have been smelling fumes of gas real strong when I accelerate. Do you thing it could be the fuel pump or maybe just some hoses or fuel filter or am I way off

How do I check if the fuel pump is working. Now found a presurised hose that somebody prior to me bandaided, could that also be the problem. Any help would be a great help I have changed the fuel filter but never the fuel pump. I just don't want to screw it up.

    Thanks
    Christy

Check first that the fuel pump is working, and eventually change the fuel filter. if it is not this mit may be a problem with the distributor.

Why wont my 1989 acura legend start, it cranks up but it wont start?

Probably your fuel pump. If its EFI remove the cap from the shreader valve on the fuel rail and turn the key to the on position. Listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump kick on. Leave the key on and press the shreader vlave. if fuel doesn't come out hard and strong then either it's the pump (most likely) or the fuel pump relay might be bad. That relay can be changed with other relays of the same part number in the fuse console under the hood. Try switching it out and see if the car starts. If all that checks out good then the next step I would take is to look at the cam / crank sensor.

89 cutlass, dies after 10 min.s starts up again then dies seconds later. Its not ignition control module. later, won't start at all...just cranks and NO fumes of gas at all, not even when smelling finger...

It is always best to start with the most simple things first. I suppose it has plenty of gas in it? It does sound like it is something as simple as a fuel filter, or Also is that 1989 could be the fuel injectors or the Fuel Injector Pressure regulator. ? It could be the fuel pump, especially if you aren't smelling any gas. It does seem like you are not getting any gas. I would start there. Good luck to you. One of your redundant magnetic speed pick-ups are bad. Probably a couple hundred bucks service from your dealer. Worth it. I also had a low idle problem when this happened; car would die at low rpm. New mag pick up fixed that also.

Gas fumes inside and out side the car when it is hot outside

Try having the area that the hose was disconnected from steamed cleaned, or go to a car wash wash and spray the area. It might help, that is if you already haven't done so.

Smell of Gas When Driving

John,
Given the age of the car, it is likely that there is a leak in the fuel line from the tank to the engine compartment. It may be leaking slowly enough to give you the smell, but not fast enough to actually drip on the ground, evaporating before dripping.. The car needs to lifted up to examine closely all lines under the car. If you can, put it up on ramps and crawl around underneath with a flashlight, NOT an electric drop light. If you can not safely get the car high enough to get a good look around, take it to a garage and get it up in the air. Tell the mechanic that you want to see the problem. Don't let them sell you a bill of goods. Insist on seeing the leak yourself. If you are lucky, you may be able to just have a section of line replaced, but it is likely that most of the line will be corroded to the point where it all needs to go. There is also a good possibility that the leak is under the hood somewhere, and the smell is drifting in through the duct work into the cabin as you drive. Also, driving with the windows may actually pull the smell into the car from under the car...Good luck. Chip
