My 2000 ford contour wont start. Engine cranks, but seems no spark. I checked plugs and coil. Fuel pump kicks on and shuts off after primed. It just got harder and harder to start, finally it wont start.

Have you changed the fuel filter.

Your pump may be priming but the pressure could be against a clogged filter.

You might want to check the fuel pressur at the rail.
It might be a fuel pressure regulator problem

It shut off while I was driving and now it won't start

The things to check are: is the engine still getting fuel and spark. Do you hear the fuel pump buzz on for 2 seconds with key in on? It has to turn on for 2 seconds to prime the lines and fuel rail on the engine-where the injectors sit. A fuel pressure gauge could be hooked up to test the fuel pressure, with key on. No pressure means the pump is not working right, not coming on. Either the pump has gone out, or the fuel pump circuit has a problem.

If gas is getting to the engine, then check for spark on a spark plug wire. No spark when cranking the engine over means there is a problem in the ignition system- spark plugs, plug wires, ignition coils (the coil pack), ignition control module, the pcm, the crankshaft position sensor-all of these components need to be checked. Buy a cheap spark tester and start there.

Why my 2005 ba ford falcon wont start?

Its either no spark or no gas. Remove the fuel line and carefully crank it over..are you getting any fuel? If not possibly clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump. If yes, are the spark plugs firing. Remove number one plug lead hold close to any metal surface on engine, crank over ..spark there..strong or weak spark? No spark check coil and associated parts.

go to any national chain parts store and they will pull the code for you-I'd guess based on what you wrote that it is a crank or cam sensor, or a bad ignition module.

2000 Ford focus: Turns over, but no ignition (Quit starting)

If you smell fuel, it could be a glogged filter, it could be a bad fuel pump, it could be a bad ignition coil, it could be a bad catylatic converter. I would guess though by the info you gave, that the coil shorted out due to a faulty plug. Look under the car also for any sign of leaking fuel, your best bet at this point is to have a scanner hooked up to it to more closely pinpoint the problem instead of guessing and spending a lot of money on guessing

My 1999 Ford Contour SE wont start

It's possible that the defective plugs blew out the Ignition Control Module. Are you getting any spark from the plugs? Try removing one of the plug leads, hold it about 1/4" from a metal surface, and have someone crank the engine. You should see a strong spark. If not, then I'd replace the ICM and see what happens.

Car turns over but won't start. battery good, alternator about to be replaced, though alt. has nothing to do with the problem. what next?

it sounds like either your not getting spark, or fuel at the engine. it could be the coil packs/plug wires or the fuel pump/filter its hard to say what to do first. when you get in the car and turn the ignition on to the position just before turning the engine over you should be able to hear the fuel pump kick on in an attempt the prime the fuel system. if you can smell fuel at the engine after cranking for a few seconds its probably getting fuel. if you have access to an ohm meter with a wire clamp you can test each of your plug wires as you crank it to see if your getting spark. each coil pack sends spark through two plug wires. if you cant read a signal from two of the plug wires trace them back to the coil packs and if they go to the same coil pack that coil pack has gone bad. if they go to separate coil packs you may have two coil packs malfunctioning. this is where i would start i hope it helps.

My 1998 Ford Contour will either start or it wont, when it does start it does so just fine, but sometimes it wont prime (it wont make that short whirring sound before you start the engine) and wont start,...

You might want to change the fuel pump Relay. You seem to know when it is getting fuel and when it does not. It is a lot easier to change a Relay than misdiagnose a bad pump. There are several signals which combine to make all the terminals on the fuel Relay switch work. The ignition wire makes the coil inside the Fuel relay connect other terminals. If the contacts are worn out, you can get an intermittent connection.

Next, for how it runs when first started, the brain gets a signal from a water temperature sensor which is an additional sensor than the water gauge. You should notice a higher RPM for a few minutes and then it will drop to normal. This action is the Cold Start Routine. It also makes the fuel mix richer. If the car is missing this routine, the engine can die at idle.

You can get a free scan at Autozone or Oreillys and it may show more details.

Running fine. Died and wont start. Cranks fine

can you hear the fuel pump kick on when you turn the key on but without crancking the engine? Generally the fuel pump will prime for about two to three seconds when you first turn the key on. if you don't hear it that's probably the culprit. If you do hear it it may be a bad pump. also should check to see if you have spark. You can do this by removing a plug wire and using another spark plug. Ground the plug to somthing metal and have someone crank the engine (making sure you are not touching the plug or metal) You should see a spark while cranking. Good luck

Engine cranks but wont start

Usually if no rpm signal, the vehicle won't start. Engine cranking, did you check for spark at the spark plugs? The fuel pressure you listed may have been the initial prime. It sounds like no injector pulse. The rpm signal comes from crank sensor. If your missing rpm signal, may thought is the crank sensor.
Were there any applicable trouble codes?
