Usually only the wheel speed sensor will set this light off - jack up and remove both front wheels and check the wheel sensor wire harness for and wear or tear - sometime these get hit by road debris and rip or break - these harnesses are easily replaced and fairly inexpensive $25-$30 each - if you don't see any damage the entire sensor unit needs to be replaced - which is part of the entire wheel hub/bearing assembly $100-$200 - this can be done with hand tools and an impact wrench and about an hour - some repair shops do have a code reader that will read ABS Codes

When applying brakes on 99 Ford Explorer they feel good until just berfore stopping then it feels like a push back on pedal and a bit of chatter like the ABS is coming on. Doesn't feel right. No Problem...

I had the same problem with my 2002 Silverado. The grease seal on the right front wheel bearing went up letting grease build up on sensor . Disconnect ABS sensor wire at wheel one wheel at a time. Abs light on dash will come on but that's ok. drive and stop easy with wire disconnected until brakes feel normal. Then you will know wheel is the problem.

Where is the ABS sensor on a 2001 chevy silverado 4x4 truck/

this sensor is is built into the hub bearing, the bearing must be replaced to replace the abs sensor, 99% of sensor fault is due to worn bearing. the sensor is on the hub follow the abs wire to sensor from wheel area, some model sensor is bolted into bearing and can be replaced with bearing, make sure there is no play in wheel or new sensor will go bad, heres a picture of the complete hub and also of just the sensor. note there are four sensors one on each wheel, a scan tool will tell you which one is bad.good day.johnjohn2_116.jpgjohnjohn2_117.jpg

There are ABS wheel speed sensors on the front wheels behind the hubs. It is possible if the hub where replaced either the pick up ring mounted to the hub itself was not installed or might have purchase non abs hubs or they just did not switch the wheel speed pickup ring on the new hub. Another thing could be either the wheel speed sensors are mis adjusted or when they replaced the hubs they hung the spindle by the abs wire and either pulled it out of socket or messed up the wires internally. Here is a basic abs system http://www.ehow.com/how_8511860_diagnose-abs-brakes.html if you have any other questions please let me know. Also please leave good feedback.

1998 chevy express van 3500 front brakes and rear are new, front calipers are new but ABS light on dash is on, the front brakes smoke after a little while of driving. Thanks Joe

I'd first make sure the new pads are the correct size. Doesn't happen very often but maybe the parts person gave you the wrong size pads ( for the smoking problem). As for the ABS light, most newer cars will throw out codes if you wait too long to change them out, I would contact a chevy dealer or search online about reseting the code (light).

How can I turn the ABS lights off in my 2001 Chevy Silverado

The ABS light indicates there is an issue with your ABS. If there is an Auto Zone around your area, have then scan the ECM for the DTC codes that has triggered the ABS light to come on. The common cause for this in your truck is a bad or dirty ABS sensor at the front wheels. Buy a can of brake parts cleaner and a brass feller gauge or you can just use the paper trick. Locate the ABS sensor on the inside of the front wheel hub and spray it clean with the brake parts cleaner and look for any damages caused buy corrosion or broken wire leads to the ABS sensor. If all wire leads are good, check to make sure the gap from the ABS sensor to the speed ring on the hub is correct. The gap should be 0.005 to 0.050 inch (0.127mm to 1.270mm), use a brass feeler gauge so it wont stick to the magnetic abs sensor or the thickness or a paper folded in fours. Good luck and hope this helps.

Abs and brake lights come on

This truck had a special policy adjustment on warranty for front abs wheel speed sensors corroding in hub and changing air gap between sensor and relector ring - causing abs and break lights come on. It most likely is the wheel speed sensors up front. You have to take off the caliper and bracket and rotor to get to the sensor.

2001 silverado 4x4 abs brake keeps coming on

in these trucks if the front abs activates at low speeds it is normally because of the wheel speed sensors in the front hubs. easy fix is to remove wheel speed sensor from wheel bearing. clean and file cast surface of bearing to allow sensor to move closer to internal reluctor ring. what happens is over time the casting rusts and creates a larger gap. please rate if this works.
