Question about 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Chevy Tahoe - 4WD and recently noticed what appears to be differential fluid on the ground under the front end - not much just a few spots, clear not really dirty - but has that differential fluid Distinct Smell (like methane or swamp gas sorta ) and I also noticed that there seems to be a noise that is noticable from the Left Front - sounds like a mud tire when you slow down it howls or hums or wa wa wa till you stop - but my tires are fairly new and are quiet ( on the other 3 corners ) HELP ? could it be u-joint, CV joint, front Half Shaft seals bearings ? help ( this is a high mileage SUV 200k)

Hi! The hum will surely be a cause of worn half shaft wheel bearing. If the wheel bearing is worn it makes a humming or grinding sound which surely require replacement. Regarding the the differential fluid leak, the oil seal will surely need replacement as well for the oil seal is surely worn. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Bad vibration in reverse

This could be anywhere in the drive-line. Process of elimination would be the best approach. From your symptoms it sounds like the bad vibration is noticed at low speeds. There are many moving parts within this system. Were there and recent repairs performed? New tires could cause a vibration, if the tread is aggressive. Damaged wheel-bearings, defective components inside the rear differential (suspect low fluid level, damaged ring and pinion or bearings), defective U-joints, or internal transmission failure. You didn't mention if the truck was 2wd or 4wd. If the vehicle is a 4X4 then you will need to inspect the transfer case, the U-joints in the output shaft, and the front wheel bearings. I'm not sure how far you want to go with the diagnostics. Please write back if you have other questions or to give an update to how the repair is going, good luck.

My 2001 Chevy tahoe indicator light reads service 4wd. What do I do?

IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS LIGHT HAS EVER COME ON, AND YOU HAVENT BEEN PUTTING THE 4WD UNDER ANY STRESS, IT MAY JUST BE A LOW FLUID LVL IN THE TRANSNFER CASE. IF FLUID LVL IS FINE THEN THE SENSOR THAT SCREWS INTO THE TRANSFER CASE HAS TAKEN A DUMP, REPLACE, AND THE LIGHT SHOULD GO OUT AFTER THE ENGINE RUNS A CYCLE. MAKE SURE THAT THE 4WD ISNT PARTIALY ENGUAGED, PUT THE TRUCK IN 4WD AND DRIVE A FEW BLOCKS THEN STOP DISENGUAGE AND SEE IF THAT WORKS..

I have a 2002 Chevy Tahoe making a grinding noise in the front drivers side wheel, what could this possibly be?

If 4wd Tahoe, it is the CV joint going out or is out, replace part about 250 bucks, very common in 4wd Tahoe

4WD LO will not disengage what can cause this.

@ 2000 gmc: Exactly right.

asker: Also, it helps if you're rolling at about 2 mph with the steering wheels straight.
You cannot shift into 4LO with the wheels turned or when in a drive
gear. Also, it may be that you need the electric shift unit serviced.
It is not recommended to drive on dry pavement while in 4LO.

My rear differential siezed up after I applied the brakes. The rear end hopped, jumped, and swerved violently. I took the rear cover off and no fluid was present. I am wondering how to unsieze a siezed up...

Are you certain that it 's the rear end, and not the brakes?

Did you set the emergency brake by accident?

I am not aware of any way that a rear differential will seize by the application of the brakes.
