Question about 2003 Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

I have 2003 Passat with 140K on the clock, 8 months ago it developed a screeching noise turning the wheel left and right when stationary like the belt was screeching. The garage could not see a problem, until 3 months later when my Fan belt snapped and nearly wrecked my engine. I had a new Fan Belt, Cam belt etc.. sorted by mechanic, but the problem has reared its ugly head again recently, i am worried it is going to snap the fan belt again...anybody know what the problem is? Thanks in advance!

The screeching noise could be rubber deposits on the belt pulley or pulley bearings for the power steering pump BUT its also a big clue that the timing belt tensioner is about to give up...CHECK BOTH please.....

I hear a loud grinding noise when i drive my car

Check front tyres & wheel bearings espesially the R/H/F. Feel tyre for high / low spots on inside & jack up & spin wheel if you get noise while jacked up it is not the tyres but wheel bearing or brake pads but more than likly a crook bearing by the sound of it. It needs to be tended to ASAP

On the advice of a friend, I turned my steering wheel full lock bout 15 times while stationary in drive. to try and get some potential air out of the rack. The car is fairly new, only about 8 months old. I...

do not worry, the power steering pump has a clutch which at the end of travel from left to right or vice versa will slip, makes a noise if you hold over steering wheel either way. no damage will occur...as far as air in system is concerned,no air can grt in unless the system has a leek or has been drained. what idiot told you to try this........

I have a 2003 Passat 1.8L turbo sedan. 2 months

Can't be 100% sure but if you didn't have this problem before doing the work on the wheel bearing I can only think 1 of two things. When they removed your whhel bearing the sensor ring for the abs got damaged or the abs sensor is damaged or not pressed into place in the knuckle. The front sensors are not screwed on, they just have a little sleeve and at time with the vibrations of doing a wheel bearing they get loose. You most probally won't have an abs fault due to these problems.

2003 BMW 325i will start but making noise

It might be a faulty power steering pump. Try checking the level of the power steering fluid. It is probably best you have your power steering system checked by a mechanic.

Does the noise occur only when the vehicle is moving?

Try moving the steering wheel from side to side, while stationary (but don't do it too often, or you might damage something). If the noise is still present when the car is stationary, then it probably is the power steering system.

If the noise only occurs while the vehicle is moving, it could be a problem with the differential/final drive, or even wheel bearings.
