Check for the proper operation of the cooling sans.
Check the drive belt on the water pump.
You may need to reverse flush your raadiator.
Some cars require bleeding the air out of the system whrn you refill it with coolant.

I can't give you any specifics on how to change your water pump, but I can answer your questions about the thermostat. Yes, the heat will work withou a thermostat. And yes, a car will overheat without one, especially in the summer months. The purpose of a thermostat is to allow cooler water to flow into your block, but also to allow the water adequate time to be cooled in the radiator. Without the thermostat, water is continuously cycling through your coolant system, getting hotter and hotter. Often I see people with malfunctioning thermostats jsut remove them, sometimes on the side of the road, just to get where they're going.

if the car overheats all the time, idle and driving, then check the water pump

if the car only overheats at idle, check the cooling fan

Have some heat in 2000 ford expidition but not


have your heater core pressure checked. it maybe clooged even though you had system flushed. additionally did you buy the correct thermostat? the computer is a sensitive thing and alot of other components are activated because of the temperature. the opening temp is 188-195 degrees. so you should have bought the 185 degree thermostat. i had same problem and bought the higher temp thermostat. i couldn't believe that such a small change would make a big difference. good luck.

Cant figure out how to change the thermostat on my 2003 Olds Alero.


  1. (This is for a 2.2L engine) If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the exhaust manifold.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolts.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
  5. Remove the thermostat.

Thermostat?


It actually sounds to me like you're low on coolant. My Jeep leaks coolant and whenever it gets low the temp gauge will go real high and then drop, and the heater doesn't work well. This is because the cooling system of your car is supposed to be a closed system, full of coolant and no air. When coolant leaks out, the space it used to occupy is now occupied by air, which does not transfer heat well. When 'air' is passing through your cooling system, no heat can be transferred from your engine to the heater and radiator, resulting in a hot engine and no heat at the heater. Then when a pocket of water passes through the system, the temperature gauge quickly falls as the water absorbs the heat from the engine. The hot water that cools the engine is where the heater gets it's heat from as well, so when water passes through the heater core, the heater works, but when it's filled with air, it doesn't.

Hot water runs through the heater core regardless of whether or not your thermostat is open or closed. That's why your heater works in the winter even before the engine is at normal operating temperature. The fact that the heater stops working is a good sign that the thermostat is probably not the culprit.

As for the water pump. If the water pump was bad, your temp gauge would go into the red and stay there. Water pumps generally don't work intermittently. Either it's good and ot works, or it's bad and it doesn't.

However, if you are in fact low on water, as I suspect, it means you probably have a leak somewhere. The leak could be in the water pump housing gasket, so depending on where you take it for repairs, they may try to sell you a new water pump anyhow. So just beware of that.

Can't get coolant flow after changing the thermostat


You will need to Change the Water Pump. It is still pumping, Just not enough to get the Thermostat to Open.

Engine overheating


If the water pump is pumping you should be able to see moving water/engine coolant in the radiator when the radiator cap is removed and the thermostat is open.
Have you checked to see if your electric cooling fan is operating properly?
