I am assuming you are referring to the top. Making a noise only would seem to indicate that the motor is working but the top is not. Therefore we can assume that your motor gears are not engaging with the drive arm. This is a known problem and Saab issued a convertible top TSB to implement a campaign to install motor bracket reinforcement kits to keep the motor gear from disengaging this way. If it is too late and you have completely stripped the gear, you must get a new or rebuilt motor assembly as the component parts are not available. If not too late, you realign the motor and drive and install the reinforcement kit.
Complete bracket kit is here. Complete TSB info here.

You need to hook up the car to the factory tool, and check for codes. I think the lower limit for the main or 5th bow potentiometer needs to be adjusted. lots of service information at www.saabservices.com in the convertible top section

2001 saab 93 convertible top problem

If you lower the back seat you will see a plastic cover on the botom of the opening. Remove the cover (6 appolstry fasteners) to reveal a metal box. The box is not actually a box but a cover for the hydrolic pump. Remove the fscrews from the lid and lift. The resevouar is clear and easy to check against the two fill lines on the side.

Top lowering problem on 2004 Saab Aero Convertible

I have a 2004 Saab 9-3 Arc convertible that had the same problem. The spring on the hinge assembly for the package shelf latch assembly was broken. The part itself is over $300. If you have someone remove the spring, your top will work again. You'll just have to put up with the top shelf hanging down in your trunk about 1 foot, but you can still manually move it to place things inside like your luggage or golf clubs.

When I attempt to lower the top on my 1997 900 SE SAAB, the computer indicateds ''check latches''. The latches are not latched.

Make sure the top is not lying on the header panel, or it may be holding one of the latch switches closed even though you unlatched it. Hold it up with one hand and retry it.

1989 saab convertable top motor

the convertible top motor is underneath the upholstery in the rear trunk compartment underneath the package shelf.undo the upolstery clips and lower the cloth in the trunk exposing the motor and reservoir. make shure after motor replacement you refill the reservoir completely and cycle the top up and down a few times to purge the lines of air. otherwise you will have erratic top operation.
