I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand AM and this morning went to start it and it did not start, just made a clicking noise and the radio and lights came on. What is the likely culprit?

The click noise and no start is a good indicator of the battery.A normal alkaline battery lasts about 6 years so if you haven't changed it yet,it's about that time.Autozone will do a free battery check if you can jump it to get there.Although the inside lights come on,there is a much higher power requirement for start than to run the lights.A bad battery will actually read about 11.8 possibly 11.9 V and still be able to light inside lights, fairly bright too.Good luck! When you want to start it...shake the key...to see if the ignition is bad...if no hope then it must be the starter...
if the starter is visible...bring a screw driver and let it touch both the solenoid post and any ground connection on the car...this is a test to see if the starter is the problem...
if the car starts then just change the starter...
if it doesn't then you might have an electrical problem...
Good Luck!

It's the security system. Let the key sit in ACC position for minimum 15 mins till security light stops flashing. Then start car.

try turning off all accessories in the car (radio, ac/heater etc.) then turn the key on for twenty (20) minutes so the computer resets itself. I had a similar problem, and still do from time to time, and I just reset the computer. turn on the key and let it set for 20 minutes then try it again. I hope this helps...

if you turn headlights on and turn key to start do you hear clicking? if so starter is possibly bad, lets trouble shoot your problem.suggest you check the fuses under hood in black box, make sure those are good. when you turn the key, you should hear at least a click or else the starter is not drawing current.try turning the headlights on and at same time turn the key and try to start, if lights go dim the starter is drawing current, does it click? if so then bad starter. if no noise at all,,still could be a bad starter.suggest that you remove the starter and have it checked out.also make sure the car is in park for sure before you do any of this. hope this helps!!

2004 Grand Am wont start, doesnt even make a clicking sound...

This sounds like the Ignition Starter Switch. It should be on the left side of the steering column.....right under the steering wheel. If you go to an auto parts store they should be able to show you what the part looks like.

Thanks,
Andrew

I was driving this morning, stopped at a store, when I started my car and put it into drive my Charging System Failure Light came on. I turned off my radio, heat and heated seats. The light went off. ...

Hi
1. Possibly your battery is on its way out.( Heavy Discharge Test will confirm this )
2. Your charging system is poor, ie:- Alternator belt is loose or the alternator is on way out, or you have a bad connection to the alternator.
Most usually its a loose alternator belt.
Good Luck !
John.

Charging System Failure Light

This is a common problem with these cars. I have had it come on also a couple of times. No need to worry unless it stays on.
