Question about 1999 Pontiac Montana

I have a 99 Pontiac Montana.One day while driving it started losing power and the battery light came on.Everytime I stopped, it got harder and harder to go again until, finally,it died completely at a stop sign.It wouldn't restart. In fact there was no power what-so-ever, no hint of life.A neighbor came to give me a jump but when it finally started it would only drive for a couple miles before dying again.Common sense told me that the alternator was toast but my husband just replaced the battery.So everytime I had to drive it I would have to charge it first.We finally replaced the alternator after weeks of this nonsense. Drove it to and from a relatives house about 15 mins away fine. However, about a block from home my battery light came on again. I pulled into the garage, turned off the van and when I tried to turn it back on it was completely dead AGAIN.Please help.I'm thinking charging the new battery may have ruined it but would that explain why it died after driving it? Seems like somehow the battery is not getting charged while I'm driving, but the alternator is brand new.

    Turned out to be a loose wire! I've driven it all over creation this weekend and no problems. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi as the battery has been changed or off the car then check all the connections are tight also check their is no little wire missing from the live as the little one is the feed from alternator, one way to check if the alt is working is to wait till its dark then start the car and park it so the head lights shine on a wall then turn the on high beam then rev the engine if the alt is working the lights will get brighter when you rev the engine up.

check their are no wires missing or come loose from the alt also check the earth wires from the battery check where they bolt to the body of the car and also the engine or gearbox, remove them give them a clean where they touch the body and eng./gearbox to rule out this causing the problem.

you may find the battery or the alt could be faulty you can test the alt by using a multimeter and check how much volts you have got going back into the battery you should have between 13 and 14 volts going into the batt to ensure its been charged correctly.

let me know what you find out ok, double check all wires and test how many volts you have got going to the battery if its less than 13 then the alt is faulty if its 13 or above then the chances are the battery is no good and needs replacing.

if you give the battery a full charge and start the engine if the alt is not working above 13volts then the battery light will be on inside the car so this would then say the alt is faulty if the light is not on until the battery is totally dead then the chances are the battery needs replacing

check your temperature if it goes up quite fast you have a problem with your radiator or water pump, but if it is ok check your battery and alternator...

2002 pontiac montana wont start battery tested good vehicle completely dead no lights, radio, etc. Ground connection good termenals clean. Would alternator be the next thing to try???


no Alternator wont stop it from starting or rolling over as long as good battery...try connections on starter..that would be what i looked for first

Beeps while driving


My van did this aswell, you must have a power sliding door, when it is not latched properly this warning goes off but it won't say on your message center "door ajar". Stop and reopen the door and close it again no more bell. good luck.
