What kind of gear oil do I use for the differential, front and back and is there a gasket for it or do I use rtv make a gasket.

I've replaced several of these gasets and they were made that way.
It wouldn't hurt to call a different autoparts store and ask them if theirs are made that way.

It should be just 80/90 gear lube unless ya got a locking diff but most just take 80/90

Not complicated but too long to write. You can get a manual from chiltons, haynes etc that has good instructions for this. Likely if you are reasonably good with tools, you could figure it out. Most important part of the job is getting a differential with the exact same gear ratio to match the rear. (usually there is a metal tag on one of the cover bolts or count the number of teeth on both the ring gear & pinion gear.) Make sure axle tubes are the same length and don't forget to bleed brakes when you are finished. Need any help along the way, just ask...I'm here!

SOURCE: where do i put the differential gear oil

On the differential you should find two square plugs. One is lower than the other to check the level of the oil. If you open it and it comes out or you stick your finger in and feel the fluid you are ok. The second is higher up and is removed to replace fluid. You will have to use a funnel with a narrow bottom. When filling, open the lower hole and fill until it comes out of that hole.

Differential gasket


Rear cover gasket is easy. Unbolt, drain, clean and replace gasket; fill with proper gear oil. Pinion seal on the front of the differential, different matter. If its the pinion seal leaking, take it to a shop with experienced techs.

How do I change my rear end fluid or check it? And what kind of differential fluid would i use for a limited slip rear end?


To check the fluid there wil be a plug on the side of the Reese diff housing. Use w 3/8" ratchet to remove the plug. The fluid should be level with the button of the hole. To change the fluid first remove the fill/check plug as described above. You always want to make sure that plug comes out first so you know you can fill the diff after your done. Then place a drip pan under the read diff and remove all the bolts that hold the diff cover top the diff housing, roughly 10-12 bolts. Then carefully pry the pan away from the housing. Let the gear lube drain while you cean the gasket meterial from both the cover and the differential housing. You can either get a new gasket or you can use a good RTV type gasket maker. I prefer the higher end GREY products myself. Lay a pencil size bead around the differential. Reinstall the cover tightening the bolts to just barely snug. The RTV should just start to push out from behind the cover. Let it sit for about a half an hour and then do the final tightening. I am almost 100% positive that the rear diff talks regular 80/90 weight gear lube. Your local parts store will be able to conffirm the correct lube and the quantity, approximately 2-4 quarts depending on what size ring gear you have.

How do you replace a gasket and cover for timing chain and rear seal gasket for oil pan on a 1978 Chevy 350 motor


the oil pan will need to be removed to repalce the rear seal, so replace the front seal and gasket then, replace the timing chain/gears if sloppy, then reinstall the oil pan.

Hi i have a kia sportage 1999 model 4x4 the vehicle is leaking oil from the front diff and there is a winding sound as well please assist


yes it is leaking differential oil and means that your differential gears are dry and winding becuase rubbing against each other you need buy a differential seal kit and clean off old seal taking apart differential and then put neew on then fill with differential fluid you can use the gasket maker if cant buy a gasket but should be done asap or you will burn up the gears and be left without a vehicle

Rear axle removal on a 2004 f150 fx4


First thing is to make sure you chock the front tires so the truck will not roll. Raise the rear end and set it on jack stands. Put the transmission in Neutral and make sure the parking brake is off. Remove the rear tires and disassemble the brakes on the side with the leaking seal. Place a drain pan under the rear differential and remove the cover. Remove the differential shaft lock bolt. You will need to turn the drive shaft by hand to access the bolt. It will be on the right side off the spider gear housing. Only use a 5/16 or 8mm 6 point box end wrench to remove the bolt. After you remove the bolt reach on the top of the spider gear housing and push the differential lock shaft down to remove it. Make sure the spider gears do not rotate after you remove the shaft. If they do you will need to realign everything to reinstall the lock shaft. Push the axle shaft in enough to remove the "C" clip from the tip of it. The axle will now slide out of the rear end. You can use the tip of the axle shaft to remove the axle seal. If you're changing the bearing as well you will need a slide hammer with axle bearing adapters to remove it. You can use a socket and hammer to install the new bearing and seal. Be careful not to damage the bearing and seal. I recommend packing grease in the back side of the seal. This helps prevent the spring on the seal lip from coming off. Assembly is the reverse. Clean off all the gear oil from the differential cover and the axle. You can use RTV as a gasket if the OEM gasket is damaged. Fill the rear end with new gear oil of the proper type. Refer to your owner's manual.

the filter kit comes with a new trans oil pan gasket you have too remove the pan some filters will pop off some have a couple small bolts or screws before you put the new gasket and pan back on make sure the suface of the trans where it bolts on is cleaned and dry use a razor too scrape it clean then dry it if they dont make a gasket use ( ultra grey RTV gasket maker ) the regular black rtv wont hold up however if your not machanicaly oreinted I would advise seking assistance from a proffesional auto service tech for that job

Why is it oil leaking on the passenger side on the floor?


Hi !
You will need to see weather the oil leak is in the front middle or real side.
If from front then it is leaking from engile sump or the oil filter.
If from middle then the gear box is leaking .. will need to change the gasket.

If from rear then the differential is leaking... either it will be from the differential drain nut .... or from th emain differential assey... here again you will need to get a new gasket...

Grease and differential oil inside left rear drum


Not that difficult, raise and support the rear of the truck and remove the wheels. Might as well replace both sides so you know you have new seals, remove the differential cover and drain the fluid. Once differential is opened and cleaned , remove the axle "C" clip that hold the axle in place and slide the axle out. Once the axle is out remove the wheel seal and clean around the area. This would be a good time to replace the wheel bearing too since you have access to them and there not that expensive. Install the new bearing and seal, note make sure you oiled the bearing and seal before installing it back and take care when installing the axle back in and "C: clip. Use RTV silicon gasket maker to seal the differential cover and wheels back on and lower. If your lazy like i am, you can drain the differential fluid and replace it with a 50/50 mix with gear oil and Lucas engine oil additives. That may stop the leak and get you a few more miles. You gear oil is (ford 75W-140) (Dana 80W-90)and the capacity is 2.6 liters and 3.5 liters if you have the 10.25 Ring gear. Good luck and hope this helps.
