Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

Driving on the highway at 60 MPH when the engine started to loose power, it went down to 1000 RPM and I was able to limp along at 25 MPH for 15 minutes before I was gradually able to get it back up to 60 MPH to get back home.

74 VETTE WITH 350 zz4 ENGINE 62mph THE rpm's at 3,000 and screaming (red lie starts at 5,000) what is my gear ratio and what should it be for highway driving

Assuming the tires are close to standard (i.e., 275/60/R15), this means you probably have a 4.11 ratio rear end in your Corvette. This was a very popular ratio on Chevys for drag racing. For highway driving you would want a higher speed ratio, such as a 3.55 or 3.36 ratio (or even a 3.08), depending on what is available. which would give you 70 MPH, 75 MPH, or 80 MPH at 3000 rpm.
You'll need to change the speedometer driven gear in your transmission for your speedometer to be accurate if you change the gear ratio.

Why nissan xterra shuts off? driving about 50-60 mph and engine shuts off it does starts fine

It's probably in limp home mode. Check RPM dial most likely wont go past 2500-3000 RPM in any gear. This is for safety when the ECU find's almost any fault it will cut the engine to save damage. Get the ECU checked for fault's fix reset and it should run properly

Engine rpm will not go above 2000 when in park and will not go above 5 mph whenin gear

Being a 2001 the first thing to do is get the car plugged into a diagnostic scanner as it will show any logged errors to help diagnose. it's not an easy one to diagnose remotely as there are so many possible causes.

Automatic, V-6, ideal RPM at 70 MPH?

Sounds like the transmission is not shifting into a higher gear. 2,500 to 3,000 rpm would be more realistic for a highway cruising speed. The higher rpm may not be a big deal as far as the engine is concerned but it will hit you pocket book pretty good when you loose the mpg that you should get. I would personally either limit your driving until it can be checked or at least slow down so that the RPMs are in the range listed above. Let me know what they find, my curiosity is peaked!

Truck wont go in gear

sounds like the cluth is slipping. i had it happen when the rear main went out of my pickup. your pickup should still drive even if the transfer case took a dump. i had one blow apart on me at 75 on the highway and still managed to limp it home with half the case missing.

CTS 2004 shuts down when making a stop and car lost thrust on Hwy

Tell the dealership uhugh. if the check engine light comes on, there is an error code which gets stored in the computer. on the nicer vehicles (like yours)it stores vehicle information at the time when the error occured....eg battery voltage, rpm, speed, temperature, rpm etc. you need the find out what the error code is. that would give you an idea on where to start looking

hope this helps

The RPM of Nissan Altima stays high when drive over 65 MPH.

No....the rpms differ from engine to engine and from manufacturer to manufacturer. RPM's are always higher at higher speeds.

with a 2002 Concord 3.5 V-6, what should the rpm be at 60mph? 70 mph?

I'm not sure if the overdrive gear is lost in the tranny, but the transmission light is on.

Thanks
