Question about 1996 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

Off roading Went off roading into a water ditch covered the truck in water ran fine for about 10 miles and stalled. I waited an hour or so to have the engine dry up a tad. Then it started again. I managed to drive home but now the engine light is on. The next morning I tried starting it again and it started up but stalled right away again... engine light still on....Could this be the alternator??? Please help thanks

Remove the distribuitor cap where the plug wires goes to and make sure everithing is dry inside but the alternator the only thing what it does is to charge the batterie so if the car cranks the you have a good batterie and laternator is good

you may have poor ignition wires that need to be replaced or a bad electrical connection that is affected by water either for the ignition system or the fuel injection system. just some places to look.

It likely had water on the ignition system. The check engine light will flash for misfire. The VSC light is on just because the check engine light is on. You likely have it dried out now and its fine. You just need to clear the codes. Autozone will do this for free.

Engine cranks but won't start

I firstly would check relay. You can use an ohmmeter to check the resistance of the relay. If you get a reading, it is good, If not it is bad. Than disconnect fuel pump wire harness and do the same.

Engine turns over but does not fire (start)

Remove distributor cap (red cap with the spark plug wires going to it) check for water, if water is apparent, dry with a lint free cloth then clean the metal nodes with a fine emery cloth.

Stalling truck

Sounds like it could be a number of things Coil breaking down, ignition module breaking down or a failing relay.Could be ignition relay or fuel pump relay. The relay is the quickest, easiest and cheapest option to try first.
