Question about 1988 Chevrolet S-10
Check for broken motor or transmission mounts. If it's moving that much, the shifter may be hitting the underbody and bumping out of gear. To check, have someone step on the brakes and shift back and forth from drive to reverse while you watch the engine move. If they carefully give it a little gas, you'll be able to see where the engine is separating from it's mounts.
