Question about 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT

1 Answer

When I press down on the gas pedal the rpm's on the vehicle jump upward by a few thousand rpm's over and over until the car changes into the next gear. the car has an automatic transmission. the problem has been going on for over a year. I have changed the spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, transmission, and air filter. A vaccuum hose recently broke and the rpm's did not jump as bad when the hose was broken. After the hose got replaced and I got my car back from the shop, the rpm's were jumping and so was the motion of the car. I recently spoke to an old friend of mine and he suggests that the problem may be the EGR valve, or even possibly the gas cap. The probelm ocurs mostly when the gas pedal is pressed down fast and held down, however the problem does occur at normal driving also. Can anyone help my solve this problem??? Thank you, Mike

When hot will randomly not start unless gas pedal is pressed all the way down. on a 2001 honda crv. replaced fule pump, fuel relay, fuel filter, dist. cap, rotor, coil, plugs, wires, and ignition control

If you hold the pedal to the floor it puts the fuel system into Clear Flood Mode. This prevents the injectors from firing and lets the already present fuel burn out. Now if this has to be done on every short trip you probably have a leaking injector.

Does the vehicle seem to crank slowly or stop and then crank when this happens?

check the vacuum lines going to the tranny, but it sounds like a vacuum leak, when the engine is at idle, spray a few short blasts of starting fluid around all the vacuum lines, if the rpms jump up, thats where the leak is

Hi Jeff, depeding on where you are using the vehicle and the quality of the fuel used, you may be having problems with the injector nozzles or more than likely a defect on the throttle position and throttle operation sensors. Have the vehicle scanned and that will point out any electronic defect, but not a mechanical problem. As you have not given very many details and omitted the year of manufacture, we do not know if the vehicle has an electronically controlled gas pedal or a cable operation. If it is the 1HZ engine the problem may be connected to the head and rotor fitted to the injector pump.Give us more details and we in turn may be able to give you more help. Regards John

How do I reset oil change light on a trailbraizer 2005? I already did oil change but the light still on

Turn key to "On" position, but do not start the vehicle, press the pedal to the floor 3 times. Not fast or slow, like 1 one thousand, two one thousand... wait a few seconds, there should be an indicator/ light should go off, turn key to off position, and your good to go. Good luck :)

2000 accord v6 engine idle goes up and down after start up

I am having the same issue after I changed my battery today. Upon doing some research it seems like there is some way of aiding the computer with proper idling. I haven't done it yet... plan on going to the dealership where I got the battery, but from my understanding you disconnect the negative line from the battery for a few mins, reconnect, and then apply gas at 3000 rpm for a few mins until the fan kicks on. AND this will help reset your car to proper idling. Good luck

I had problems with the idle and with the car stalling and found that it was a failed oxygen sensor. I replaced it and the car runs great now.

one unit that operates ratio changes and is connected to the engine is that vacuum operated actuator on the transmission
it is possible that that unit is failing , vacuum hose is leaking and that will cause ratio changes as the vacuum varies
run the fault codes to check for wiring problems or VSS or TCM problems as well
