Check fuel pressure regulator by removing the vacuum hose. If idle does not change or fuel comes out of regulator replace it. Otherwise check your injectors one at a time while car is running. If idle does not change replace it.

What size engine? Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator? Take the vac line off and see if it is leaking.

Check the regulator. The regulator can be leaking and the fuel pressure will still be good. Take the vac line off the regulator when the engine is running. No fuel should come from the vac fitting of the regulator.

hey i put a new regulator in and it doesnt idle up and down anymore but it still smokes black when you rev it up and it sprays black stuff on the ground that smells like carbon?

  • caleb swenson Oct 17, 2010

it shakes when i drive it but doesn't idle up and down anymore since i put the fuel regulator in, do you think that that shaking and smoking has something to do with maybe that the motor isn't running on all eight cylinders?

check your map sensor which is locared by the evaporator housing, unplug the vacuum hose and see if if the black smoke still persist. if so replace it

  • caleb swenson Oct 21, 2010

just had a map sensor put in so can't be that

So the regulator was leaking and you replaced it? If yes you likely fouled the plugs. Pull out the spark plugs and check to see if they are fouled and replace them.

1985 Ford F150 302,5.0 Smoking running Rich and idling high and low

first of all u need to determine what color of smoke it is and is it coming out of the exhaust pipe. black smoke means excessive gas burning ...blue smoke means burning oil ...white smoke if seen in warm weather conditions means coolant leak into cylinder heads... but as running rich and high low idle might have a vacuum leak or carburetor need new base gasket or rebuilt ... good luck

I have a 1988 F150 with a 302, the truck has a hard time finding a Idle

Many idling problems such as yours can be resolved by simply having the car tuned up ie , new air filter, change all spark plugs, oil change, etc... you'd be surprised by the outcome! Good luck.

Idle problems

The F 150 depending on the engine has a MAP sensor if the sensor vacuum get disconnected or even if the sensor fails the result is black smoke.RPM jumnping up and down look for a vaccum hose that is disconnected or broken.

Not sure about the idle speed thing, but it sounds like one or more injectors is dripping (not fully closing). That would cause the smoking/gas smell. You should take them out and have a specialized shop like RC Engineering clean them. Might also be the idle issue.
