Question about 1994 Subaru SVX

1 Answer

I've replaced the power steering belt on my 1994 SVX and it is still squealing. The replacement stopped it for a week or so but it is just as bad as it was. I was told you can replace the bearings in a pulley, is there any truth to that?

Well, I had a similar problem with a belt on a 1990 Olds Cutlass Calais that kept slipping until I sprayed it with 'belt dressing.'

I replaced the belt but it still slipped.
I would try that first before replacing the power steering pump itself.
I don't think that changing the bearings in the power steering pump would make a difference.
It's a belt problem.

if this has an automatic belt tensioner on it this sounds like the tensioner is weak and needs replacing. a weak or bad tensioner does and can cause belt squealing and can throw the belt alignment off causing your problem.

I just replaced power steering pressure hose on a 2002 Hyundai Sonata GLS 6 cylinder. Now its s squeals really bad when I turn the steering wheel and the belts are squealing like mad too what do I need to...

Looks like you need a new belt. Inspect the belt for any sign of damage like cracks etc. If belt appears fine then just tighten it. Add few drops of brake oil on pulley (surface which comes in contact with belt) to stop minor squeals if left after tightening the belt.

My 92 chevy blazer is making a loud squealing noise sounds like my belts but its not that I've replaced the belt and the tensioner what else could it be?

Bearings in Alternator, water pump, power steering pump or even a squeal from Vacuum line, EGR diaphram or similar. Check power steering fluid level.

Now when you replaced the tensioner, did you notice more pulleys that were just "there" and not connected to anything? These are idler pulleys and are helpful in routing the belt. They have bearings too!

Pleae rate my info.

Power steering not working on my 1992 SVX Li

I had an SVX, and loved it! Had to replace the power steering pump too, but I found that until I did a really thorough flush that it still didn't work right. Jack the front wheels off the ground. Have a helper get in the car to start it and turn the wheel back and forth. Before starting it, disconnect the low-pressure return hose from the pump and put the end of it into a bucket. Be ready with a couple of quarts of ATF fluid (you don't need to use power steering fluid.) Start the car and pour fresh fluid into the pump while the steering wheel is being turned all of the way back and forth a couple of times. Don't let the fluid level get down to where it pumps any air! Shut it off just before you finish pouring in the second quart of ATF. Reconnect the low pressure hose, run it again and adjust the fluid level. This worked for me - the steering operated like new. Good luck.

Replaced pressure line on power steering. now battery light comes on. belt squeeled when started, then stopped. Did power steering fluid get on belt and caused it to squeal and slip?

If you have a 4cyl then the belts for PS and alternator are separate. Taking a peek under the hood when the engine is running should give you a better idea if a belt is slipping, broken, etc. A common source of squealing is an alternator belt that is too loose and slips under heavy load charging the battery after startup. It's possible that some sort of problem happened due to replacing alternator belt but that belt slipping should be pretty easy to see. (again ... speaking of the 4cyl / 22RE enging)

the pulley tentioner on the power steering belt, i ve done lots of them, they are self tentioning and over time can cause to much tention on the belt, if this the case when you have the steering at full lock it should squeal the loudest.

if you have to spay the belt to get it to stop then the belt is most likly streched or bad. take the belt off and turn all the free spinng pullys alt, power steering,a/c,ect if all spin good with no horible sounds then replace the belt , if any turn hard then this is what the problem is.but im betting it's the belt
