Trying to set timing on 77 chev nova with a v6 the battery keep dying every time i try to crank it.

Looking at the crank shaft pulley, you should see a timing mark on the front gear cover and then there will be marks on the pulley. Line up these marks using a ratchet and socket on the front crankshaft pulley bolt. Next remove the distributor cap and look at the rotor button and determine which spark plug the button is pointing at. Find exactly which engine you have in this car. 1977 novas came with a straight 6 and a v8. If a v6 has been installed you need to know which one as the chevy engines have very different firing orders. You need to know the firing order to check the timing correctly. Be sure the firing order is right before going any further.

There are two (2) belts total. The power steering belt also goes around the fan/alternator. Double pulley on the alternator/fan, single pulley on power steering pump. The power steering pump mounts above the alternator on the left side of the engine.

sounds like there is a problem with the automatic choke / or choke unloader vacuum diaphram. Fast idle and curb idle might need adjustments

Alternator for 1977 chevy nova

I would suggest you find a similar car and look at it. Much clearer than a picture, and maybe quicker. Dan Day
