There not a certain type for that car really. You can use any kind sold at your local gas station.

1991 subaru legacy won't shift past 2nd gear

If this is a manual transmission you may have worn shifter parts. If it is an automatic you most likely will need an overhaul, most transmission repair shops give free inspections in hope they get the work of repairing what is wrong.

Automatic transmission goes forward in reverse in 1991 subaru Legacy

Try removing the shifter cable from the shifter arm on the transmission . Remove the arm from the shaft on the transmission and position the arm 180 degrees and install it back on the shaft. reconnect the shifter cable to the arm and see what is does then. Outside of that I don't know.

Automatic ****** filter

Sorry, you cannot use the word that begins with a "T" and ends with a "Y". As you can see, the automatic censoring programs grab it. They assume you are posting stuff with pornographic content. Besides, the word is "TRANSMISSION" anyway.

1991 Subaru Legacy does not use a transmission "filter". There is what the manufacturer calls a "fluid screen" inside the transmission pan area which can be removed for cleaning and then, reused. It does require a new transmission pan gasket to accomplish this.

My car is slow to engage drive

i am guessing your car is an automatic. i would think you are low on transmission fluid and the auto probably needs a service to change the filter adjust the bands and renew the oil.

I have a leak in my 97 automatic subaru legacy and need to add some fluid to my transmission just to get it to a shop. It doesn't say in the manual or on any site I've been to where to add it or what kind...

The type best used is "Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid Type-HP or IDEMITSU ATF HP. you add it through the dip stick hole. You may also wish to add a transmission leak oil to swell the gaskets and stop the leak add it the same way if you choose to use it. both of these should be available at your local auto parts store like NAPA. Raz,...

Transmission not shifting past 2nd gear.

It might not be the shift sol. How low did the trans fluid get?? Might have gotten too low and caused damage to the hyd. section of the trans. Also what type of trans fluid was used?? Only should use dexron III. Sounds like an overhaul is in the cards.....sorry.
