Brake diagram for a 1998 ford ranger w/o cruise

Does the peddle feel very hard to depress if so that line is the vacuum for the booster if your taking about the actual metal brake lines they are the rear line is for the rear and the front is the front if you drive the truck you will ruin the master cylinder because you will be pulling air into the system unless it's really blocked off to not let any air in but you can drive it using the emergency brakes if you have good coordination but be careful why not call a friend or a taxi or some parts stores deliver that's much better then high risk of accidents and chance taking

How long can a break line be broking before you have no brakes

You have what is called a diagonal brake system. What that is, you have two brake systems on one brake pedal. One system controls the lt. front and rt rear and the other controls the rt. front and lt. rear. If a line line breaks that system stops working. This system was set up to cause uniform braking. With a line broke you are only stopping on two wheels. If you get into a panic situation you will not stop in time and could suffer great loss. GET THAT LINE FIXED NOW.

I have a 2000 1.8 turboVW beetle replaced the front calipers and a rear drivers side caliper that appeared to be locked up, bled the brakes all around go to mash on the brakes and the pedal feels real hard...

If you replaced the pads and used metallic pads, they do have a brake-in period. if you do all four at once this can be a bit unnerving when stopping the first few times. If indeed this is what is happening, 2 or 3 40mph panic stops on and unpopulated street should heat them up and solve the problem. Also, if you were under the hood messing around, make sure you didn't knock the vacuum hose to the power brake booster off.

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
