Question about 1997 Mitsubishi Diamante

The coolant level in the radiator goes low, and the reserve doesn't transfer to the radiator. The temp constantly gets high, after about 15 minutes of driving or idling. Just replaced the thermostat, and the problems continue. Is it the water pump?

You may have a blown head gasket. Open the radiator cap and make sure the radiator is full. start the engine and run it until it's hot. Keep the radiator full. Once the engine is hot and the thermostat is open, all of the air should be bled out of the system. If air continues to bubble up in the radiator, you have a blown head gasket. How to inspect,diagnosis and repair minor over heating problem in under 2 hours.

Thanks for viewing my Fixya tip post.

My goal is to solve the most common over-heat,running hot on stop and go traffic and intermittent cabin heating problem (no heat)

The target audience is DIY'er who has a car that's just starting to over-heating and has about 2 hours to ran though my check list.

The first part is basic universal safety.

Follow by steps the required to fully diagnose the root cause of the problem.

Example:air pocket in coolant system VS worn water pump VS blown head gasket.

THE INSPECTION

Follow by THE FIX.

If you are just getting the initial sign of over-heating then you will be able to replace the thermostat2_bing.gif,gasket,black RTV,coolant mix and 50/50 mix coolant temperature sensor and get back on the road for under $80.

For those who has leaks on the radiator,water pump the repair cost will be much higher.

Losing coolant and having WHITE smoke coming out of the tailpipe after 15 minutes of warming up is a sign of blown head gasket.
This is an internal head gasket damage and the engine head(s) must be remove to do a head gasket job.

My tip is for folk what are encounter over-heating on the first week.
Hopefully under 3 times of over-heating.

Repeat over heat will warp the aluminum head(s),blow out radiator hose(s) and radiator.

SAFETY FIRST


MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

MAKE SURE safety goggles are on at all time.

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Make sure there is not wobble movement or touching surrounding plastic.

Clean/check/change the thermo/temp sensor,contacts and wires.

CRC Electrical Contact Cleaner is the ideal chemical to speed up the cleaning job.
====

Clean the metal contacts on fan relay,inside the relay socket and fan socket.

Follow the sensor all the way to the firewall to make use it's in perfect condition.

Inspect other wiring for cut,and exposed wiring.

Use 3M high temp. electrical tape to protect damaged portion of the wire.

THE INSPECTION


THIS IS A 30+ minutes JOB.


The longer you can monitor the coolant system will give you a better idea of the condition of the coolant system.


Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

Air pocket can be trap inside the coolant system.

The water pump's turbine / fins is totally ineffective when there is not coolant surrounding the water pump.

This test will kill two birds with one stone.
=====

Most radiator shop charge $75 just to excavate / air purge the coolant system.

=====

Top of the coolant reserve tank to the COLD / COOL / LOW level.

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Keep the coolant reserve tank cap in a safe location.

The goal is to lift the vehicle higher to monitor the air pockets and let it escape.


The radiator should be 8-20" high from the stationary position to let the air pocket to escape.


Let the car ran and start monitor the temperature.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.


Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark


After the thermostat open up at 195-210 F,Electric fan should turn on automatically


If your vehicle has a secondary electrical fan then turn on the A/C and all lights,radio,and electrical items to ensure the fan is operation.


5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.


If you DO NOT see any in rush of bubbles when thermostat opening between the 5-12 minutes mark then the maybe partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.


Give the thermostat housing few gentle taps.
(follow the TOP large radiator hose to the top portion of the engine)


If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

A coolant pressure test is also a must to pressurize the coolant system to locate addition leaks.

Examples:radiator,head gasket,freeze plugs,or water pump


Let engine cold down,lower the car onto level server and top off coolant reserve tank to the TOP / FULL /HOT level.


Start monitor for coolant lost everyday.

THE FIX

If the radiator cap is over 5 years old or rusted badly then change it.
The spring can be weaken and will not hold pressure.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Thermostat,gasket and black RTV is not expensive and it should be change every 4 years or 48,000 miles.


A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.
Check your service log for the last coolant flush.


Low heat condition is cause by combination of stuck thermostat,low coolant level,dirty coolant system and worn turbine / fins on the water pump.

If the water pump has over 85,000 miles on it then water pump can SLOWLY leak into the time belt cover.

The turbine/fins on the water pump can erode badly after 96,000 miles.

Monitor coolant level and check for water pump,radiator,coolant hose leaks.

Place a larger cardboard under the radiator,water pump or timing belt cover. Monitor the coolant drip and inspect the problem area accordingly

Visual Inspect your coolant reserve tank for bubbles when the temp. is near 195F+. (after a long drive) If you see hydrocarbon leaks then you should stop driving the vehicle until a shop do a pressure test and dye tests.

My temp gauge goes to the third line before fans come on and only the low fan comes on. I already replaced thermostat, engine coolant temp. sensor and radiator flush... any idea why high fans dont come on...


CHECK COOLANT FAN FUSES AND RELAYS. CHECK COOLANT LEVEL.MAKE SURE ITS NOT TOO LOW BECAUSE IF COOLANT TOO LOW . BY NO COOLANT AROUND OR COOLANT SENSOR NOT SUBMERGED IN COOLANT COOLING FANS WONT TURN ON.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50/50 ANTIFREEZE AND WATER. CHECK FOR CLAPSE RADIATOR HOSES.CHECK RADIATOR HOSE AT WATER PUMP.IF HOSE LOOK CLAPSE REPLACE IT AND BLEED COOLANT SYSTEM.IF EVERY THING HAS BEEN DONE YOU NEED ENGINE BLOCK FLUSHED OUT.HEATER CORE ALSO COULD BE STOPPED UP.A VERY HIGH MILEAGE ENGINE WILL OVER HEAT.OLD ENGINE LOSES COMPRESSION AND HORSE POWER.PUTTING MORE LOAD ON THE OLD ENGINE WILL MAKE IT OVER HEAT.IF COOLANT LEVEL IS LOW.BLEED COOLANT SYSTEM.START THE ENGINE LET IT IDLE FEW MINUTES WATCH THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE.WHEN TEMPERATURE START RISING.TURN OFF THE ENGINE LET IT SET FOR 20 MINUTES.TAKE A LARGE RAG PLACE OVER RADIATOR CAP ON COOLANT EXPANSION TANK SLOWLY OPEN RADIATOR CAP JUST A LITTLE TO RELEASE A LITTLE PRESSURE AT A TIME.DONT OPEN CAP RAPIDLY OR YOU WILL GET SCALDED.ONCE THE RADIATOR CAP REMOVED.IF COOLANT LOW ADD MORE COOLANT IN THE THE COOLANT EXPANSION UNTIL YOU GET TO THE COLD MARK.REPEAT THIS PROCEDURE START ENGINE LET IT RUN UNTIL TEMP GAUGE START CLIMBING A BIT DONT LET CAR RUN TO OVER HEAT JUST IDLE UNTIL TEMP JUST START TO RISE.THEN YOU TURN OFF ENGINE. WAIT 20 MINUTES.THEN USE LARGE RAG OPEN RADIATOR CAP LITTLE AT A TIME. DO THIS PROCEDURE UNTIL THE COOLANT IN THE EXPANSION TANK STOP DROPPING. THEN ALL THE AIR IS BLEED OUT THE COOLANT.WHEN COOLANT LEVEL STOP DROPPING, WHEN YOU DRIVE CAR AROUND.AND TURN OFF ENGINE.WHEN ENGINE OFF CAR SET FOR A WHILE KEEP CHECK ON THE COOLANT LEVEL IN COOLANT EXPANSION TANK. THE COOLANT LEVEL SHOULD BE AT THE COLD MARK IN THE EXPANSION TANK.MAKE SURE COOLANT IS IN THE EXPANSION TANK.IF NOT AIR WILL DRAW IN COOLANT SYSTEM. CAUSING ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.IF BLEEDING AIR OUT THE COOLANT SYSTEM DONT HELP AND COOLANT FANS DONT TURN ON YOU HAVE PCM PROBLEMS.

Cars overheating


The first thing you should do is to check your coolant level. (Antifreeze) Thermostats very rarely stick in a closed position, although it can happen. (They usually stick open and cause the engine to not reach operating temperature.) If the coolant level is ok, I would check the operation of the cooling fans. They should both come on when the A/C is turned on MAX with the blower on HIGH. Then they should come on (With the A/C off) When the engine temperature gets to approximately 226 degrees fahrenheit.

If the coolant level is low and your car is equipped with a 3.4L engine, I would suspect a blown intake manifold gasket and/or cylider head gasket.(The 3.4L engines are notorious for this.)

If you have the 3.8L engine and the coolant level is low, I would check for leakage into the intake plenum due to the EGR tube melting the plastic plenum just behind the throttle body.

THEN U MOST LIKELY HAVE A LEAKING HEAD GASKET, VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS V8 NORTHSTAR ENGINE.

My subaru outback is running hot and the heater doesn't blow hot air only cool


Have you checked the coolant level? If it is low, the car will run hot, and coolant won't flow through the heater core, which will result in a no heat situation. If this isn't the problem, let me know, I will try to help further.

Where do you fill radiator on 02 taurus ses? my husband is changing the thermostat, drained the radiator and says there is no radiator cap, just a reserve tank and cap - does he fill it through the...


YES. But dont overfill it. Slowly add coolant to the low full line and let it run a while, like 10 minutes. if the level goes down fill it to the full line. After it cools for 30 minutes recheck the level and add as needed.

Temperature/heat wont work/dashboard lights on and off


It sounds to me like you're low on coolant. When you checked the coolant level, did you actually open the radiator cap and make sure the radiator is full? The plastic tank you generally add coolant too is actually an 'overflow' or 'reserve' tank. There is a hose that runs from that tank to the top of the radiator so if the radiator gets low on coolant, more coolant -should- run in from the overflow tank. However in practice this does not always work. I have a Jeep that leaks coolant and experiences this exact same problem. Coolant will not run from the reserve tank into the radiator because the hose is plugged up, and whenever the radiator gets low on coolant the temp gauge will go real high and then drop, and the heater doesn't work well. This is because the cooling system of your car is supposed to be a closed system, full of coolant and no air. When coolant leaks out, the space it used to occupy is now occupied by air, which does not transfer heat well. When 'air' is passing through your cooling system, no heat can be transferred from your engine to the heater and radiator, resulting in a hot engine and no heat at the heater. Then when a pocket of water passes through the system, the temperature gauge quickly falls as the water absorbs the heat from the engine. The hot water that cools the engine is where the heater gets it's heat from as well, so when water passes through the heater core, the heater works, but when it's filled with air, it doesn't.
