Question about 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

The other day, my 2000 Grand Marquis sputtered and died. It was running fine up to this point. Found out there was a fuel cut off button in the trunk that was tripped. Reset the button and now the car will not crank. The voltage drops from 12.8 to 8. I replaced the battery, starter and ignition switch. Is there a starter solenoid on the firewall? Any feedback would be appreciated.

There is a starter relay in the relay box. The solenoid should be mounted to the starter, isn't it?

Solutions for 1998 grand marquis that will not idle

Have someone check the fuel pressure. Check EGR pod, you may have a Vacuum leak. Disconnect connector at a part called a TPS which is mounted on a Butterfly flap shaft opposite the throttle cable. Use an Ohmmeter on the TPS and check for smooth changes in Ohms as throttle is pressed.
If you get to the warmed up engine running part, use a water spray bottle and spray the seams of the intake and any Vacuum lines or fixtures you see. If the engine stalls or sputters then you have found the leak.

Someone will need to check for spark to the plugs and fuel pressure when it fails to start. Could be a relay or several other components.

No gas getting to filter,,, car has been running fine

Change the fuel pump or make sure the fuel safety cut off switch didn't trip or look for a blown fuse. The fuel cut off is usually found in the trunk.

Engine stalls while driving. Fuel deprivation?

I am having the exact same problem with my VW Touareg @60,000 miles. Two weeks ago and again today it sputters and stalls shortly after starting. I brought it into the shop and they could not reproduce the problem and said it was fine. Also, they had no ideas when I describes the problem. Anyone know what it going on? I am out of warranty.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalls when brakes are applied

My 2000 Grand Cherokee had the same problem, without all the sputtering, it would just die approaching a stop. We could only keep it running by slightly pushing down on the gas petal when coming to a stop. I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor, but that didn't change anything. A new mechanic I found replaced the Idle Air Control Valve, and we've had no problems in a week.
