Question about 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

My brakes are locking up in the rear of my 2001 cavalier z24. I had new shoes put on because i thought it was the problem... didn't work, i had my master cylinder replaced and it seamed to work for about 2 weeks then went back to bad. I went back to the mechanic and it worked for about another 2 weeks. Real locks, anti-lock system comes on because wheels lock- seams to have a very short pedal (nothing happens until the end of the brake) also i have to pull my parking brake nearly all the way up to engage. I heard that the curvature is wrong for all cavaliers and needs to be filed down on the brake shoes. Idk what the problem is but winter is about to hit and it will be bad.

Are they adjusted up tight? You can check this yourself. Jack up one wheel at a time, take the wheel off, take the drum off, and adjust (#16 in the picture) until the drum barely goes on.

Rear brake locks up at slow speeds on 2001 cavalier

i would have the rear brake limiter mechanism checked first as this device regulates brake pressure so it is equal to both back wheels, if this is ok i'd check that the wheel cylinders aren't sticking and that the brake shoe assembly has been replaced properly

Rear drum brakes

Typical cavalier problem James,
First thing is to get drums off, the sandpaper the brake shoes, you'll see at the top and bottom of each shoe the only part of the shoes being used.I recommend picking up a new set of drums from Auto Zone, they are around $20.00 each. Now the last thing is back off the emergency adjuster about 5 threads, then you can adjust your drum brakes.

I have a 1998 cavalier. My back wheel on drivers side was locking up so had a wheel cylinder replace and a brake line by just someone, then that didn''t help so I took it to all stars and they did...

its possible that the seals in the wheel cylinder were damaged from the previous problem when it didn`t fix the problem.was the replaced seal a new one or a used one that the someone installed or the seals were defective from the manufacture.also were the brakes shoes cleaned of the brake fluid that was on them from the original cylinder leaking on them as this can cause the brakes to lock up,as well as if the brakes are not adjusted properly can cause this as they will catch and turn with the drum until it can`t rotate any more causing the brakes to lock up.as far as the hardware missing then the person that replaced the wheel cylinder didn`t replace everything that they took off or didn`t know what was suppose to be there as far as parts.

2001 Kia sportage - rear driver wheel locks up randomly. Seems to happen most when I've backed up and put the brakes on, then going forward the rear wheel is seized solid! It happens randomly, and often...

Remove the brake drum and check the brake shoes. I had a similar problem with my 99 Sportage. The brake shoe separated from the backing and was jamming the brake drum. A new set of brake shoes fixed the problem.

My rear drum brakes are working too much

Back off the adjusters so the shoes barely touch the drums. Also are the shoes installed correctly. Get a diagram of the proper way to install the shoes,i.e. At a parts store or dealer. Good luck!

I have a 2001 cavalier and the rear brakes keep locking up. we've replaced the master cylinder, proportioning valve, pads, rotors, hardware, shoes, drums, and right front hub bearing. got any ideas on...

Was this problem there before you changed the Brake shoes. The cavalier has shoes on the rear.
It seems like the leaning show the SHORT one is not facing the front of the car where it should be. If you check the shoes one is shorter than the other in a set. Hope this works. Some model year Cavalier also had a problem with the Backing plate the plate the shoes attaches to.

Brake problem

It sounds like your rear brakes needs to be service. Your brake shoes are worn too thin or the retainer clips are broken holding your brake shoes in the right place. Good luck

Driver side rear brake locks up when it is wet or rainy out.

the drivers side rear brake shoes may be adjusted to tightly, so that immedatly when you step on the pedal, it locks up. try adjusting them in a bit first. Also, make sure that the wheel cyliner is the correct one, and it is not to big. i have not ever seen a proportioning valve problem on a cavalier.
