Best approach is to get a scan. Are you having starting problems?

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5932051-check_engine_light_check. These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

I have a 2008 Saturn Vue the check engine light is on and it does not want to shift into drive

Low oil, compressor went bad. Take battery post off and reset the check engine light. Might think it is fixed.

How can I fix my car with the oil light coming on. The engine does intermittent jerking during driving

Oil light usually indicates LOW oil pressure.. Which will kill your engi ne and cause very expense repairs. FIRST Check oil level, If the level is good. You need to find out if the engine really has low oil pressure. A new oil pressure switch is about $8.00 you might start there. If the light still comes on its a good posibilty your car has bad oil pres.. To find out for sure you will need to install a Pressure guage and check the actual pressure.. If the Oil Level is good and you still have low oil pressure The engine has internal wear or damage.. You should not drive it till you fix the low pressure problem. rebuild or replace engine. The intermittant "jerking" can be unrelated to the oil pres problem or you engine is going away because of the pressure problem.

Overdrive is not working

There are a couple of things to check on the M-46 with Type P overdrive (I think yours is a type P and not a type J):

1) Check the electrical connections from the switch on the top of the gearshift knob to the solenoid in the transmission with a VOM. Switch depressed - 12 VDC. Switch not depressed - 0 VDC. If OK - you are getting power to the solenoid that activates the overdrive.
2) Test the solenoid. Either use the switch on the top of the gearshift or use a local power source (12 VDC) wired to the solenoid. Listen for a light click. If you do not hear a click; the solenoid is probably defective. Test with a known good unit.
3) If the solenoid is working (and you are sure it is working) then check the oil level of the overdrive unit. These units use Dexron II/III (check your manual for the correct oil type) and ensure the oil level is correct.
4) These overdrive units are a lot like conventional automatic transmissions and are constructed as such. Consequently, the home mechanic should confine troubleshooting to the solenoid and correct oil level. The Type P units are slightly more durable than the earlier type J units but in either instance rely on fairly rigorous maintenance.

My 2005 accord lost power and it give a code 2646 ,what could it be?

Diagnostic Trouble Code P2646 has to do with your Variable Timing Electronic Control (VTEC). This is the system that adjusts your valve timing while you are driving.

The MOST COMMON cause of this code is low oil levels. In these cases, checking the engine oil level in your engine and adjusting it to the proper level will fix the problem. Also, if this is the case, you may want to consider changing your oil more often and/or repairing any leaks that have caused your oil level to be low.

Otherwise, there could be circuit failures in the VTEC solenoid or the oil passeges to the solenoid could be clogged up inside the engine. This will require diagnostics and VTEC system inspection to verify the cause.

Check oil light stays lit and engine knocks untill you get up to 45 mph...then light goes off and car sounds fine...i may have ran it dry a half a mile...replaced oil filter and oil pan

Check your oil level, if your oil level is good. Then you may have a bad oil pump and your going to have to tear the engine apart to replace it, but if you think you have done damage to the engine from running it dry of oil. Replace the engine, the cost will be cheaper to replace the engine with a used one from a salvage yard then to replace the bad oil pump in you engine since your bearings may be damaged.
Good luck and thank you for using Fixya, in the mean time you might get away with adding Lucas engine oil treatment.

The engine light is on I think it's because the wind wiper it stops and then comes back on

Check all fluids and fuses. Specially engine oil. When Engine light comes on it might be a simple thing like a sensor or a low level of fuel to a low level in oil and it can breake your engine. Have someone check it if you can't. Good luck.
