the shifter which hooks to the box under the hood is missing a rubber ring, causing it to slip off. just go to an auto parts store and buy some shifter rings, and press one on

Does the engine crank but just not start? Or... are you cycling the ignition switch without trying to crank the engine? Based on the information you have given, I would first guess that the fuel pump may be going out. I say this because when you first turn the key on the pump primes the engine with pressurized fuel. If the pump is getting old, it may take a few power cycles to get it going. You can test this theory by having somebody listen near the rear of the car while you turn the key on for the first time. The fuel pump make a faint, yet distinctive high pitch noise that can be heard when you turn the key on. Try that first. Next thing you would try is checking the relays for proper function... starting with the fuel pump relay. Good luck.

I have a 2001 Ford Escape (alternator just replaced) and as I was backing out of my parking space, and shifting into drive, the gear shift lost all tension and wouldn't shift. I turned off the engine....

seems like your shift cable is disconnected , you might have hit it when you were working on the alternator just go back and re-trace your steps

I need to the piece is that keeps the transmision

You need a gear shift cable. just had one replaced. The little plastic ring piece at teh end broke and fell off the cable and Ford stated that I needed to replace whole cable since the little piece was not sold as an individual part. To get it fix ranges from $200 -$300 unless you know how to take off steering column and replace it. The part/cable actual costs about 70-80 bucks. Good luck!

Replace cable

You have to take the plastic panels around the streeing wheel off (it's pretty easy). The cable is sold as a complete assembly. There is a plastic coupling on each end and ususlly, the end next to the transmission breaks. The internal plastic falls out and the cable slips off the trans. shift pin. You can fix it without replacing the cable, if you can find the correct size "E" clip to hold the transmission side of the cable to the pin attached to the transmission. Just look at the transmission side of the cable and you will see what I am refering to. It's pretty easy to access from under the hood (pass side). Just look and you will see the loose cable that has popped off the shift pin. I just happened to find the correct E pin and it worked. If you buy a nes cable assembly, it will probably cost around $68-retail.
Wholesale cost is around $35. I was going to replace the shift cable, but the clip seems to be working fine and I have not had a problem...
