Code PO442 . nothing found. Will light reset on its own?

Hi there,

Code P0442 relates to the Evaporative Emmission Control (EVAP) system and denotes a small leak.

The EVAP system prevents the escape of dangerous fuel vapours - these vapours are re-directed to what's called a Charcoal Canister (looks like a medium-sized cylinder with tiny hoses running to it).

As this relates to fuel vapours, one of the most common causes can be as simple as the petrol cap is not screwed on tight enough (or has been recently replaced with an incorrect aftermarket type). Other causes can be a hose has come off somewhere, a hose has a pin-hole or is perforated.

This type of code will usually itself after a few trips, but most people prefer to clear codes after resolving the cause.

First, check the petrol cap.
Second, you will need to trace all hoses within the Evap system and check for any signs of leakage (wear or damage etc), and remedy accordingly.

Codes can be cleared either by using a suitable Diagnostic Scan Tool, or simply disconnecting the NEGATIVE lead of your car battery for a few minutes, then reconnecting (Note: if the battery is disconnected or goes flat, run engine after power is restored, to allow the engine to relearn its settings).

If the code returns, then you should have the Evap system checked properly by an authorised dealership.

Cheers,

Scott

Cruise control stopped working at about 70k. Enable light at switch comes on, but will not set a cruise speed (dash light will not turn on). I've not begun to inspect, but have read many problems about...

Check for a broken plastic piece under the hood on the throttle control. Top, Back right of the engine. Probably will see the cruse control cable sitting there disconnected.

Oxygen sensors on a 2007 pontiac grand prix? The error code says they are bad but is there a way to tell which one?

This is the tech info on how to test the O2 sensor:

Many intermittent open or shorted circuits come and go with harness and connector movement caused by vibration, engine torque, bumps and rough pavement, etc.
  1. Test the wiring harness and connectors by performing the following:
    • Move the related connectors and wiring while monitoring the appropriate scan tool data.
    • Move the related connectors and wiring with the component commanded ON and OFF, with the scan tool. Observe the components operation.
    • With the engine running, move the related connectors and wiring while monitoring engine operation
    • If harness or connector movement affects the data displayed, the component and system operation, or the engine operation, inspect and repair the harness or connections as necessary
  2. Test the electrical connections and/or wiring by performing the following:
    • Inspect for incorrect mating of the connector halves, or terminals not fully seated in the connector body, backed-out.
    • Inspect for improperly formed or damaged terminals. Test for incorrect terminal tension.
    • Inspect for poor terminal to wire connections including terminals crimped over insulation. This requires removing the terminal from the connector body.
    • Inspect for corrosion or water intrusion. Pierced or damaged insulation can allow moisture to enter the wiring. The conductor can corrode inside the insulation with little visible evidence. Look for swollen and stiff sections of wire in the suspect circuits.
    • Inspect for wires that are broken inside the insulation
  3. Here is info on the sensor:
