Question about 2007 Porsche Cayman Coupe

3 Answers

It seems every time I start my car after it has sit for over an hour, it spits white smoke from the exhaust. If it has ran off and on all day, there is no white smoke. But if I let it sit, for instance overnight, the next morning, it will smoke. It isn't a large amount of smoke, and it goes away quick, but I know this shouldn't be happening. Any idea's on what to check out.

One other thing I thought of:
The car has a built in digital oil pressure gague and before you crank the engine, after turning the key on, it calibrates and measures the oil level. All of this seems fine according to the readouts. One possibility I have considered is this 'measuring' opens a valve or something that may be burning off the excess when I start it, especially if I crank it before the measurement is complete (but I have tried both ways). It could be too much oil (although the readout claims it is within tolerance).
Also to note: Zero smoke this morning upon starting it, nor was there any smoke leaving work yesterday. Could it have been just a little too much oil? Is this just intermittent and will I probably see the issue again?
Thanks folks for your answers. I guess to get down to it, my main focus here was to see if there were any known issues for this model of a similar nature, and if so was the known issue a major thing, or something more trivial.

I have a similar symptom with my 2009 Cayman S. i.e white/light grey smoke for about 10 seconds after cold start up.This has occured three times in the last 200 miles, and is now (October 2011) being looked at again by a Sussex main dealer who as yet have to come to a conclusion or solution. My personal opinion is that it appears to be a leaking valve guide stem seal, but Porsche disagree or are at least sceptical of this. Still what do I know? I've only been in the motor trade for 45 years!

Regarding 2001 audi a6 quattro 2.7t....i was driving to work the car was fine then white smoke starting coming from under the hood and tail pipe. i stopped veilce and alot of oil was dripping from front of car. I towed it home and i looked under the hood and there was oil from valve cover gasket. i let the car sit for a few days, had it running again for a good hour and no white smoke was coming out. I removed the valve cover and gaskets are all bad. i want to know can the valve cover gasket leak cause the white smoke to come from exhaust pipe?

1996 Subaru Legacy GT - Twin Turbo, manual trans: started spitting a lot of white smoke out of the exhaust. It did that when the car started then seemed to be ok when in idle but when on take off and...

Expect to hear your head gasket needs replacing, at a minimum. White smoke means it's burning coolant. How much it will cost I can only guess, but usually a head gasket repair- a few hundred dollars-it's pretty time consuming and labor intensive, especially with all the turbo stuff that could be in the way. Good luck.

Have a 2003 volkswagen passat 130 4 motion, when starting the engine there is white/ greyish smoke coming out of the exhaust, does not seem to be the head gasket as no signs of this e.g oil and water are...

blue is oil
White is coolant/water It will also smell kind of sweet
black is fuel

If you don't drive your car very many miles or let it sit for days/weeks at a time it is most likely condensation in the exhaust. Take her on a nice 50 mile brisk drive and see if the problem clears up. If it does think condensation if not you will need to dig further.

Just bought an 1997 crysler sebring took for a ride and started smoking white smoke but heater wortks perfect and no water in oil does not overheat smokes mostly when sitting and idling

Does this happen after about an hour of running? This time of year condensation easily forms in exhaust and gives the "white smoke" look. If you have access to a large garage that you can get it into - see if it's still smoking. DON'T do it long as exhaust fumes can kill you (I had to include that) Keep an close eye on temp gauge and coolant levels. I suspect it's just condensation.

Smoke comeing from exsost

You have a blown headgasket, cracked cylinder head, cracked block only if the color of the smoke is a constant white...requires extensive tests compression etc.
if uits blue in color you have oil passing the rings and out the exhaust valeves on the exhaust stroke, possible collapsed oil rings or valve guide stem seals and knerling ...requirements machinist work.
Momentary cold start white smoke can be normal residual condensation that clears rapidly after start up, blue intial smoke on only the start up after sitting for hours is signs of valve guide wear to be done by a machine shop.

Big puff of white smoke at start up after sitting for several hours.

white smoke is water
blue smoke is oil.
nest time try and smell the white smoke see if it smells sweet?
if it does its antifreeze.
and also black smoke is fuel (like a leaky injector )
hope this helps
