Question about 1991 Dodge Dakota

2 Answers

I have a 1991 Dodge Dakota (U.S.) and about a month ago my bf was driving it and left the lights on when he went in to work. I had to come jump start the truck and ended up replacing the battery, as it wouldn't keep a charge after that. (Yes, I'm sure it wasn't the alternator.) Ever since, the running lights have been out and will not come on. I took the truck in for an oil change to my local Dodge Dealer and asked them to check the lights. They said that the two marquis lights around the license plate were out, but beyond that, all the running lights were working fine. I don't think the two license plate lights would make a difference. I have checked all the fuses, the blinkers and backup lights work, I am at a loss as to what to check next. I have no errror codes on my truck... I am at a loss...where do I look next? I just want the running lights back on before winter is here.

What running lights lights specifically? Front or rear? have you checked the bulbs?

  • Shan L Oct 12, 2010

All the running lights, both front and rear...

Okay, just got done replacing all the bulbs and the fuse. So far, still nothing. I am thinking that it might be the module that controls the buzzer? The door buzzer keeps randomly going off as well now, and strangly enough, the only way to make it be quiet is to open the door and latch it on the first it's adjar but not open.

Had my mechanic take a look today as well and he said it's blowing the fuse before the lights even come on, since it has charge to the fuse box, but stil isn't working. Have an appointment next Tusday with a shop that does electrical trouble shooting. ($90/hour!) So if I don't have any solutions by then, I guess I'll just go that route.

This seems to have worked. Thank you!

Thank you everyone. I was thinking it was the DRL module as well. I am not sure exactly what fixed it, but when we went to the electrician, he just changed the fuse out and more problems. I was replacing the fuse with the door open, but perhaps he replaced a different fuse. Either way, thank you everyone for your input!

This is a long shot but what if you replace the blown fuse with the drivers door in the open position. If the running lights come on and stay on slowly close the door. If the lights go out/fuse blows I wouldn't hesitate to check the harness to the door in between the door and the a pillar. There is a lot of flew in that area and it is has a been a problem for chrysler products for as long as I can remember.

I have a 1991 Dodge Dakota, 5.2L V8. It doesnt turn over, and the lights will not turn on. I have replaced the battery and really cleaned the cables and still nothing. The weird thing is, is when I jump...

It sounds like the alternator needs to be replaced. To be sure, take the alternator off and take it to a local parts store and they will check it for free. If you replaced the battery, then it just isn't charging. Try the alternator first, and let me know how that works.

1985 dodge powerwagon, lights went dim driving home now wont start, just replaced battery 6 months ago. starter clicked at first then nothing.

The alternator may not be charging the battery. Jump start it, and use a volt meter at the battery, red lead to positive and black to neg. The meter should read between 13 and almost 15 volts, any lower than 13 volts, the alternator is no good. (this is done with vehicle running).

Dodge Dakota overdrive and ABS/brake problem

The problem could be in your differential. If the ABS traction ring has any defects in the teeth, the rear wheel speed sensor will stop registering and disable your ABS.
This may not resolve your transmission concern, but it may answer your ABS/Brake light problem.
