Question about BMW 530

1 Answer

It is a 2002 530i. The coolant leaked from a broken hose. The hose was repaired, but the coolant light came on. The screw in the back was fixed, but the light still comes on and the coolant is still leaking.

A BMW mechanic has been working on this problem. The car has been to his shop twice, and when we return home, the problem is still there, the coolant light comes on and there is water under the car in the garage.

If coolant is leaking, I would replace any leaky parts and refill the overflow tank and radiator with coolant.

Where is the coolant leaking from, now?

OK, I would return the vehicle to the BMW mechanic and ask him to pressure test when cold and hot, and to try to determine where the leak is and remove and replace any necessary parts.

I went through this on a 1999 Ford Expedition that was pressure tested after I noticed it was leaking, and it somehow sealed up when I took it to the radiator repair shop. A few months later it leaked again, and when he pressure tested it, it came up leaking. I had the radiator replaced, in this example, and it is completely sealed now.

I would take the vehicle back to the BMW technician and ask him to pressure test it, again, and describe the leaking as coming back in your garage.

One of the coolant hoses or plastic coolant pipe is leaking coolant. You need it repaired and refilled with coolant.

I have a 2006 Buick Rendezvous. The radiator coolant has leaked into the Transmission. How can I fix this outside of replacing the transmission?

You have a real problem on your hands. Not only did coolant get into the transmission, transmission fluid most likely got into your coolant as well. The trans fluid will eat the lining of all the rubber cooling hoses and cause them to soften and eventually fail, and will cause a black, gunky color in the coolant. You will need to:
1. Replace the radiator since the trans cooler inside has broken.
2. Replace all coolant hoses and flush the entire cooling system.
3. Have the transmission rebuilt or replaced to ensure all coolant traces have been removed.

There is no easy fix for this....I had to do it myself.

Broken heater core

A heater core is nothing more than a small radiator with coolant passing through it. Like a radiator, heat in the coolant is dispersed to the surrounding air -inside the heater case. If it isn't leaking coolant, you will only have to fix it when you can't stand being without a heater. Would it help not using it? Only if using it causes it to leak.
What exactly is broken? If it is losing coolant, a temporary remedy is to splice the two heater hoses together. You can pull them off at the firewall, the inlet and outlet hoses, buy a plastic coupling piece that fits snugly into the hoses, and clamp them tight with hose clamps. You will have no heater, but you won't have a core that is leaking coolant into the heater case.
If the heater core is good, your problem might be the various doors in the case not being opened properly. The vacuum controlled actuators for the doors needs checked.

How do you fix the knockin in the engine?

To fix an engine coolant leak buy an anti-leak product and add it to the coolant. Next solder or use a high-temperature epoxy to fix the leak, and replace any broken hoses.------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coolant is draining out of coolant reservoir from bottom of reservoir side after driving the car for a few minutes. The engine was just overhauled. Did the mechanic(s) forget to attach a hose at the...

Or the coolant tank is broken! You may have to remove the tank to figure out which as the hose is hard to get to with the trank bolted down. The hose could be rotted or the cap may not be releasing buid up of pressue or the head gasket or engine casting of one kind or other may be leaking commpression presure into the cooling system. It maybe time to go back to the rebuilder and have them check their work. If they finished the job all the way it sould'nt leak and they should of run it long enough to find a proble like that and fixed it before you gotr the car back.

Symbol lit up

there can be a yellow light in the cluster that looks like a small radiator or box with waves inside of it to indicate water. This light means that the coolant level sensor has detected a low coolant level. Typically the expansion tanks inside of these cars will crack from heat and age. A simple diagnosis is to check your coolant level and top it off. Do not forget to bleed it by unscrewing the bleeder screw found on the upper radiator hose while filling up the reservoir found on the right hand side of the radiator. once the coolant has been filled, tighten the bleeder screw back down but be careful not to over tighten. and finally screw on the expansion tank cap. run the vehicle to operating temperature and use a flashlight to inspect the engine bay for leaks. If there is a leak, it will need to be repaired. possible leaks are a cracked expansion tank, leaking radiator hoses, or a leaking water pump or thermostat.

Check gage light is on (temperature)

it is low on coolant...there could be a number of reasons,,,a stuck thermostat forcing the water out...,leaking water pump...leaking radiator or hose.....bad headgasket. some of this you could fix at home...you first need to locate the leak....pressure test the system....
