Question about Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Just bought a 2002 Mercury Sable LS, I brought it to Ford/Mercury repair to get a full diagnostic, they said I need to change the DPFE sensor, which some people say it's the same as the EGR sensor, but dealer said it's not the same. They also said I need to change all the vacuum hoses for the DPFE, can u please tell me where the DPFE sensor and the vacuum hoses are located & how it looks (eventually show pics) & where I could find all this cheaper than at the dealership. Thanks

You will need to get the parts from the dealer.

What engine?

the EGR valve is generally located on the backside of the intake plenum near the throttle body. There will be a metal pipe that goes in between the EGR valve and the exhaust manifold. If you follow that pipe you will run into to rubber looking hoses. the DPFE sensor will be on the other end of those two hose. The hoses are two different diameters as well as the fittings that they attach to. Make sure you have the right hose going to the right fitting.

1999 mercury sable engine code p1744,p0401. Failed e check. EGR looks new, replaced egr solenoid then cleared codes. what more can i do about the p0401 code and the p1744 code Thanks

for p0401:
In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.
Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open.
Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits.
Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model).
Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one).
Replace the EGR valve.

Low coolant light

When that happens it is usually because the coolant level membrane sensor is faulty.

Repair is not expensive, but must be done by a qualified mechanic.

The DPFE sensor is a very common failure on all Ford models. Just have the sensor replaced. Or do it yourself. It is very easy to change you can do it in 10 minutes.

DPFE Sensor with codes PO401 And PO402

The DPFE is located near the EGR valve, it has 2 very thick silicone rubber hoses connected to it that come off the exhaust. It is rectangular and about 1/2 the size of a pack of smokes
