Sounds like a head gasket is worn
depending on who services vehicle will be what the cost will be

I recommend since your going to be doing the gasket replacement i would do some of the other major gasket replacements also this will spare the trouble of break down in the future and having to replaced what has already been replaced and now paying double for the cost of one job

Oil smells like gas

This is not good and could be very dangerous. Likely causes are leaky fuel injector(s), engine mechanical problem such as bent or burt valve, hole in piston, mis-fire on one or more cylinders, and others. Gas in the oil can cause major engine problems. Do not try to run engine until fixed.

the varnish smell you describe is classic for stale petrol.

change that first, as long as there is a spark and good petrol, the engine should run.

run the car gently up to normal running temperature, then shut off and restart when cool.
there will be a few things sticking slightly, but they will probably free off when the engine warms up and the oil circulates properly

Take a close inspection to your waterpump. Pump has a "weep" hole in bottom side of casting. It's an early warning system to detect seal leak before waterpump seizes up and does major damage. It could be so slight that coolant is blowing back along oil pan. That would be where I'd start. Do you smell coolant inside the rig? If so, check passenger floor up to firewall for dampness in carpet - indicating heater core leak.

the seal will gradually start leaking more as time goes by and needs to be replaced, but in the mean time if u keep the oil full and it does not go below low line on dipstick you can drive with no engine damage. sometimes adding oil leak additive to oil will help , using a slightly heavier oil during warm weather will often help reduce oil loss and give you more time to get enough money to replace seal. If engine gets too low on oil it will cause major engine damage.
