Question about 1996 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

I just purchased a 96 ford taurus with a 3.0 engine. It's misfiring. I replaced the plugs( autolites ) and gapped the at .044 ( according to autozone). I also replaced the wires, pcv, and air filter. It ran better but was still missing a little. I replaced the heater coil ( for heat) now it's missing again. I checked to see if I had knocked anything loose from under the hood. Everything looks ok. What advice would you give to locate this misfire i'm having? Thanks in advance

can you hear any sparks jumping? Check the routings of the wires to make sure thry aren't too close to the engine.

You can go to Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan. Usually the onboard computer will pickup an electrical problem. There may be something recorded that a scan will show.

If not, look for nonelectrical problems like Vacuum leaks. Take a water spray bottle and go around the Intake and Vacuum lines, a change in RPM would indicate a leak. You could have a dirty Injector which is firing Electrically, but clogged. Since each cylinder bank averages all 3 cylinders for RICH and LEAN errors, an Intermittent miss would not show as easily.

If you have the oldstyle Vacuum gauge, it would show fluctuations for problems in Valve action. Like a Valve not closing due to Carbon buildup, a weak Valve spring, a clogged Lifter, all things not electrical. So if the result indicates possible clogs, you can get Professional cleaning of the Injectors or try a gas additive. You may need a product such as an oil additive, like Lubegard to free the Lifters.

Thanks for using Fixya!

What is the gap for autolite spark plugs, for a ford bronco 5.8L

You should always use the sticker under the hood of your vehicle. If for some reason your says .052-.056, then that is what you use. The stickers on the truck will have the most specific info for that truck of anything. Autolites have a history of causing poor running for some reason. I've never used them

What is the spark plug gap for a 2004 Ford Taurus

Depends on which engine you have. Dual Over Head Cam (DOHC) seems to be .054. The other 2 options are .044. Usually it will be printed on a sticker under your hood and also in the owners manual. Be careful some types of spark plugs that they make today are not adjustable. Hope this helps.

Why am I misfiring after changing spark plugs

Try the following....
Verify the firing order, you may have switched two of the wires. Your local auto parts store can help with that or go to your favorite on-line search engine and type in something like "2004 taurus 3.0 engine firing order". Look for a diagram that shows both the cylinder numbering and numbering at the coil pack. If possible, do not drive the car until you have corrected the misfire.
Old plug wires do not like being disturbed. If you do not know how old they are, or they are the originals, replace them. With plug wires, its the age, not the miles.
Verify that you have the right plugs and that they are gapped correctly. It wouldn't be the first time a parts store gave out the wrong plugs. The plugs should be Autolite AP104 or the equivelant.
Pull the plugs out and see if any gaps are mashed shut.

Random misfire,1.6L ,ecm, changed coilpack, new plug wires,

Try low end plugs like

Autolite 3923
Autolite Ignition Spark Plug: Copper Core; Price Is Per Spark Plug Spark Plug - Resistor Type: Oe Style; Gap .044
NGK Spark Plug: Plug No. BKR6E-11 V-Power Spark Plug: Gap @ .044
Adjust the gap to 0.44

Top off coolant tank and start monitor or the next few days.
If you are losing coolant then it can be the 1st sign of blowing head gasket.
Do a pressure test if the temp is getting higher and losing coolant.

Old worn out O2 sensor will not provide the right data to the ECU.

I'm leaving the tough on to the later here.

Vacuum leak on air intake tube / lines / and valve cover are VERY tough

If it's over 4 years old then change it. It will help you save on gas mileage.
Take your time and check one spot at a time.

Random misfire is not a easy fix.
