If the pump has been damaged you might need to replace it ,if its good what you need to do is feel up the pump ,put the cap on it,get someone to help start the truck our car have them turn the stearing wheel right then left ,you do this for about 5 or 6 min, than you brake lose the presure side of your power stearing hose do not take it off just a nough too let the air and a little bit of fluid come out.you might hafe to do this a few times .

Why is my 1997 Ford Escort steering wheel making a grinding noise when it is turned (it is not power asisted steering)?

There are two bearings in the steering column. One or both may be bad. The most likely problem would be the lower bearing. While someone is turning the steering wheel look under the hood at the bottom of the steering column and see if it is rotating smoothly or kind of jumpy. You might have to place your hand on it to feel if it is smooth or jumpy (make sure the engine is off and the exhaust is not hot).

Flushing is recommended. Have a look at the upper and lower couplings at the steering rod just before the steering rack which could be jammed.
