Question about Mitsubishi Pickup

1 Answer

I have a mitsubishi L200 4 life 4x4 it had a whirring sound coming from the clutch/gearbox area when stationary which seemed to go by depressing the clutch. Also it was clunky going into particularly second gear. I drove it into my garage but it seemed to grumble when it was on engine braking. I have subsequently taken the clutch and gearbox out. The clutch doesnt look that bad but it does appear to be slightly worn over one of the rivets. The vehicle has done over 100K. I am not sure whether to get another gearbox. Please could you advise asap. Many thanks. Howard Veale

SOURCE: GEARBOX WONT GO INTO GEAR

hi from uk could you please give a little more info ? what make/model car ? has this problem occured suddenly? has car been layed up off road some time prior to this unable to select gears ? this problem sounds very much like the clutch drive plate is either stuck to flywheel hence question above ? or it is sticking on primary/spigot shaft for some reason and failing to disengage drive to g/box? how does clutch pedal feel ? you might try selecting 2nd gear with clutch fully pressed and h/brake on then try starting engine if engine starts ?runs then put slight revs on and slip clutch a few times this may work if plate is sticking? if you come back with update may be able to advise further

It is the release bearing, you should get it replaced quickly otherwise it might damage the plate.

Well, it sounds like the clutch cylinder / clutch linkage is not properly adjusted or the clutch cylinder is not fully bled, or it is malfunctioning -- it's not fully depressing the pressure plate when the pedal is pushed down, therefore, the clutch is still engaged.

There's a loud squeaky noise coming from the engine when the car starts. It's there when the car is stationary and goes after around 5 seconds. We hear it when the car is stationary at traffic lights too...

sounds like this may be a bad drive belt. check belt for cracks and glazing. while belt is removed you may also wish to listen to pulleys while spinning by hand.

My transmission makes noise until I depress my clutch

sounds like the main shaft bearings within the gearbox itself. i would of said the release bearing but u already changed it. the main shaft doesnt spin with the clutch pedal pressed. check for oil leaks and check the oil level in the gearbox.

Grinding in the gearbox area while driving

manual ,thank heaven ,dont see many autos here in spain, right without driving car so i can hear it then it stands two possibilities ,when clutch is depressed you hear a noise like a grinding squel ,this is the thrust bearing ,if you hear a rumbling noise that disappears when clutch is depressed then this is lay shaft bearings ,Now also the problem can be the fingers on the clutch plate are worn and the bearing is pushing the clutch plate fingers down but if one or two are worn away then the thrust bearing is being pushed through the pressure plate ,either way a new clutch is need and as these vehicles are rear wheel drive they are not difficult to renew ,Just have to make yourself a clutch alignment tool from a broom handle .Dont be scared of it they are not that difficult to do just dirty and messy thats all the hardest part is aligning the clutch so the spigot shaft goes through easly and you dont have to struggle pushing the gearbox in

No drive suspect clutch problem

It's a pretty hard one as it's a 4X4 gearbox with the transfer case as well. For your own safety, I would suggest you get a workshop doing it. Try to source out your own parts, shop around if you are on a budget. It's very heavy and if you are not used to that it might be not worth.
Cheers and hope you make the right decision.

Vehicle Transmission

Seems like you have a seized gearbox. If the engine can turn on the starter when you depress the clutch that will confirm the problem lies in the gearbox. One outside possibility is that there is an inboard handbrake on the Isuzu. An inboard handbrake is commonly located at the back of the gearbox on the drive shaft. If this is the case it could be the handbrake jamming.
