Question about 1998 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

I have a 1998 GMC Sierra 4x4 with a 350 Motor 5.7L V8. Went to change the oil for the first time and discovered that the oil plug just spins in place. My conclusion is that the oil plug is stripped. How would you go about getting that oil plug out? And, would the next step be to replace the oil pan?

If its spinning than the nut inside the pad has broken its welds to the pan. Replacing the pan is the fix.

Spray starting fluid into the air intake of the engine, if it starts and you have fuel pressure you have no injection or injector pulse as we call it. Check ECM fuse one and two for continuity if it starts with fluid..

How much oil do i need for my 1996 GMC sierra with 5.3L

I would say start at 4.5 to 5 quarts and check after starting the motor. Slowly add to the full line on the dipstick. Some GM V8's can take up to 6 quarts.

On the V8 engines it should be at the back of the block under the distributor I have also seen them down next to the oil filter on rare ocassions.
